View Full Version : Logging Sessions?

It's possible I'm just blind, but does Fantasy Grounds maintain a log of game sessions, and are those logs easily managed?
I downloaded a demo, but can't see for sure. One of the things I have to have for any system we use is a library of session logs for the memory-impaired among my group; a designation I am rapidly falling towards.

I love all the other features, but logs have to be part of a solution for my group.
The other is free clients, but we'd solve that here with an ultimate license.

Thanks,

John

In the campaign folder, there's a chatlog.html file. That has the log of the session, stored on the GM's machine.
The demo session may not be recorded. Saving the session is one thing that is disabled.

Thanks for the info.

So, that means, If I'm GMing, it saves the log and if I want to break the log out per sessions I just rename the log at the end of each session? If I forget, does it just keep appending new material, or does it hit a size limit and begin truncating?

If it does truncate, it takes quite a while until it does - I have a complete single-file chatlog for a campaign of almost 100 sessions on my pc...;)

It doesn't truncate - it keeps adding to it.

There is also a handy chatlog scrubber that can remove certain entries from the chatlog so the GM can make a sanitised version available: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?8133-Chat-Log-Scrubber-released

Okay, that's pretty sweet.

Thanks guys. The information, as well as the help getting it, seems to make the decision pretty darned easy.

Thanks for the help and feedback. That more than anything makes FGII the most attractive option so far.

Still playing with the demo and one more question occurred to me. If I have the registered product instead of the demo, can I create a campaign without loading any of the toolsets? And/Or is there already a tool set for Wild Talents/One Roll Engine out there?

Edit to add: I know I can make my own; but I'm not sure how easy that is and in the meantime, no ruleset is better than the wrong ruleset.

I've been waffling for a long while about trying a virtual table for my games instead of IRC. I started with the old WebRPG Online, which I loved until they made certain "upgrades" which severely degraded performance. We moved to IRC, which I've since gotten used to, but it was never as cool. The two things IRC always did better was being more accessible (countless free options for my players, able to run on even the oldest PCs); and logging (mIRC logs by room and by date, making session logs a snap).

But lacking a decent dice option, a decent way to post images, and even the occasional map (I was never big on maps, but sometimes it helps to cement a scene), is something I've missed for... well... a long time now. So it's time to upgrade my games.

You can load up a core ruleset that is basically a framework. In the soon the be released FG 3.0 there is the CoreRPG ruleset that most other FG rulesets will be based on - you can load this up and have a good structure to use FG as a VTT without it being system specific. I'm not sure what ruleset would be best for Wild Talents/One Roll Engine - there are a number of community produced rulesets available in the library: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/library/

Ooh... 3.0? Should I wait?

Wild Talents uses d10 in pools of up to ten dice. Success is determined by rolling matching sets. The more you roll in a set, the faster the action is (and in a fight, this "width" determines the base damage done). The higher the die on the set, the better you do (and in combat, the 'height' also determines hit location). In a fight, Width is important because width determines the order of actions (with height as a tiebreaker), and if a faster action removes the opportunity for a slower action, then too bad so sad for ht slower roll.

Complicating this are two special sorts of die. A Hard Die always rolls 10. They represent full power, maximum efficiency, and always aiming for the head. Hard Dice are the first dice lost to penalties, but you cannot voluntarily drop a hard dice unless you choose to drop ALL of them. A Wiggle Die rolls whatever number the player wants, and the player gets to decide after the other dice are rolled. These represent the ultimate in finesse and control, letting you decide exactly where and how hard to hit. They're the last to be lost to penalties, and can be dropped voluntarily, but why would you?

Through stats and skills, a player can have a pool of more than ten dice, but you never roll more than ten. So you can pick and choose from the pool, except of course for the all-or-nothing restriction on dropping hard dice.

No need to wait - the upgrade to 3.0 will be free so you can play with 2.9.4 now and upgrade to 3.0 for free when it comes out.

Or, use the FG 3.0 beta now and the CoreRPG ruleset - it is pretty much there, especially as far as the CoreRPG side goes. https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?19714-Test-Release-v3-0-%28beta%29 I don't think there is any ruleset like what you mention, so using the CoreRPG ruleset in FG 3.0 will give you a good solid ruleset as far as FG VTT functionality goes - and a freeform character sheet that allows you to add freeform text info.

Just wanted to say that the ready help of the community is what pushed me over the edge into buying my ultimate license. I'll probably still be running on IRC for a bit while I work to get set up, but then I look forward to getting my group onto FG, too.

Thanks, all.

Drive it to Australia - I'm sure damned will help out once it is there. It'll be quite dirty by then too...
