View Full Version : Displaying a 0 (zero) instead of 10 for the tens digit of Percentage Dice

Greetings, this seems to have been asked a couple of years ago but did not get an answer. When rolling d100 (percentage dice), both dice range from 1 to 10. This causes a problem for percentages in that you can never get a percentage from 01 to 10. For example, if the tens digit rolls a 10 and the ones digit rolls a 10, the die total is 20. In reality, percentage dice should be where each die rolls 0 (zero) to 9. This will cover all possibilities from 1 to 100 (with 00 being 100). Even if you try to roll 2 d10s, the result is the same in that you can never get a value below 11.
Is there a fix for this or plans to fix this with release 3?
Thanks,
Danny

Actually when rolling percentage dice there is a die for the 10's digit and a die for the 1's digit. The 10's digit die has the following values 00, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90. The 1's digit has values 1-10. The values are then added together so you can get 1-100. A 00 and a 1 would result in a 1. A 90 and a 10 would result in a 100. So the full range is possible even though it isn't using the same way I used to do it with real percentage dice.

Quite true,
But I do agree with Danny that the following should be an option:
units die: 0-9
tens die: 00-90
for a roll of 1-9, 00 and 1-9 should be rolled
a roll of 0 and 00 gives 100 total
That's how we've always played with pen and paper (I've never seen unit dice with a 10 on it, only a 0)
EDIT: a roll of 0 (units) and 10 (tens) would give total of 10

This was voted on a while ago: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?8354-d100-percentile-die-convention
The majority did agree with Brian. :) But, a few did follow the 90 + 10 (0) = 100 convention.

I agree with both of you about wanting it the way I've always played it. I even tried to see if I could change it but wasn't able to find any way to really do then. I do have an idea that I want to try now even though it won't likely be usable anywhere but my test.

Thanks all. I understand how it works now. My problem was that (a) I was too used to the standard convention of pen and paper dice, and (2) I have a mathematics background. In the base 10 number system, there is no such thing as a 10 as a legitimate numeral. All numbers are 0 through 9. For instance, the number 10 (ten) is not a zero with a 10 in the ones place. It is a one in the tens place with a zero in the ones place. I have no big issue with how Fantasy Grounds uses dice now that I understand the convention (it is different than conventional thinking). To me, this is like using Hewlett Packard scientific calculators (which use reverse polish notation: number [enter], number [enter], then +; rather than the conventional [number] + [number] enter. No big deal as long as you understand the convention but it is hard to jump to understanding if you don't know the convention.
Trenloe, I did see the poll but unless I am mistaken, the majority actually wanted it more like I was suggesting but that is not the way it ended up. This led me to believe that it just hadn't been done, since there was no developer post in there closing the thread with the message saying "thanks for the input, but we are doing it this way: ...".
Like I said, no big deal now that I know. Thanks everyone for the clarifications.

Actually, to be honest this came about because I am fooling with the Dark Heresy ruleset. I am looking into re-doing the ruleset. I have a little bit of issues with how it works and want to make it more standard (like the Pathfinder ruleset). I don't like the little circles for all talents since you only ever have is a handful. I want to build it to use links to reference the talents themselves (like what Pathfinder does). If I can do this, I will likely also modify that one for Rogue Trader.
I have already created the reference library for all skills, talents, equipment, psychic abilities, and rules for playing the game. The only reason I have not shared this with the community because of the fact that Games Workshop hires more lawyers than game developers and I don't want to get Fantasy Grounds in any kind of legal issues. If anyone wants a copy, you can ask me privately. If the developers of Fantasy Grounds already know that this is okay, I will share it but I seriously doubt whether God himself could get permission from Games Workshop (based on what I have been told by people far more in the know with the Warhammer stuff than I).
As part of the figuring out how the rulesets work, I got sidetracked by the percentage dice mechanics :-P

Here's hoping they include it in FG3.0
