I don't know much about modifying rulesets. How hard would it be, to make it so you could right-click on a Pin Note on an image, and select what type of pin you want it to look like. For example, if I had a pin to use just for Map Notes, and players could just hover their mouse over them to read what is at that location on the map, and a different looking pin image for encounters, that only the DM would see, so he could click on that pin to bring up encounters at that location, but the players couldn't see those pins. That sort of thing - multiple pin types of different colours, to represent different content being marked on the map?

Map pins are a feature of the FG client. The ruleset only provides the graphic to display for the pins. At this point, there is only one pin "type". If you would like to see something different, please post to our wish list (see my sig).

You can use tokens with tooltip text to show small pieces of info to the players - see this thread, post #4 in specific: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19029
