I was wondering if its possible to roll things like d5, d7, D16 or D24 in FG2.

You can create code for custom dice, but I have to admit it's been a long time since I did it.
You will not get a die to pick up and throw (I think it would the dice you added the custom dice to).
If you search the forums for create a d3 die you might get lucky (or wait for someone cleverer than I to post the code).

An extension could be written to provide an alternative to the /die command to support any "d#". As Doswelk mentioned, you would not get a physical die or a chat box, but you could have a script output a random value in that die range.

Hi!
This is the one thing holding me back from running a DCC RPG game using Fantasy Grounds. To see a actual d24 or d16 roll across the Fantasy Grounds background would be a sight to see! :)
Perhaps someday it will happen.

Hi Primarch,
That is exactly what I am interested in. I have never played the ruleset before but I have read the core rule book and I am very interested in learning the game. DCC looks like a lot of fun. Some people are playing on Google hangout and Roll20 but I haven't found a seat yet. Do you DM DCC?

Hi!
I have used both those VTT's. I don't like either of them much. Fantasy Grounds spoils you that way. :p
Neither have 3d dice that accommodate the odd die types, its just not the same typing in "roll d14". My players would like it.
I'm currently not DM'ing any DCC, although I am dying to. I'm just not going to do it until some VTT (preferably Fantasy Grounds) produces some 3d odd shaped dice.

I agree FG does become comfortable. Purple sorcerer has a cool app (https://purplesorcerer.com/crawler/). Now if only we could drop it into FG2

Hi!
Amen brother! If that app could be ported into Fantasy Grounds that's all that would be needed!

I was about to purchase an Ultimate license, but the lack of non standard dice made me hesitate.
The fact that you can't even type /die 1d30 and get a result is my main concern.
Add to that having to use additional software for voice/video... I've played my share of games on FG2 over the years, but even with the v3 alpha it's now starting to seem dated in comparison to the fast developing 'free' alternatives like Roll20. Running a game already requires a big enough cash and time investment as is... now I need to write my own script just to roll dice? No thanks!

You could go old school with everything but the d7. IE a d30 is a d6 and a d10, likewise a d5 is half a d10, and a d6 and d8 generates a d16 and the d6 and d12 the d24. The d6 determines high/low or thirds. For the d7 I guess you would have to roll a d8 and re-roll an 8.

That's exactly what I did in my Ubergame Ruleset: it needed a d281 for a given roll, so I wrote a quick script to roll 1d3 & 1d% and then re-roll if the result was 282+ (the d3 = 3 & the d% = 82+). I get the result I need AND the dice actually roll across the chat box.

not even close. there are so few things that roll20 currently does that even come close to FG in actual use.

I'm sure a member of the very helpful FG community would be willing to help you out with getting custom random numbers working for custom /die commands (they'd be that - random numbers, you won't see the dice rolling) - or do something like our 2 Australian friends mention above. The community here is very helpful and has experience in customising rulesets - take a look in the library for examples of custom rulesets that have been created by the community: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/library/ There is also a Star Wars: Edge of the Empire ruleset to add to this list.
Don't be put off by the "flashy" exterior of Roll20 and similar products - there is a lot of depth and automation in Fantasy Grounds that make running (and playing) games on Fantasy Grounds easier. Sure, it doesn't have Voice/Video - there are many freely available applications that do that and plenty of people have their preference as to what they prefer to use: Google Hangout, Skype, TeamSpeak, Mumble, etc.. Why bloat Fantasy Grounds with a voice/video client that may not be the preferred choice of the GM/players?

To voice an opinion opposite of oracular, I just DID buy my ultimate license. Tonight I plan to spend some time learning myself how best to roll some One-Roll Engine dice pools.
I've waffled for ten frickin' YEARS on getting a virtual tabletop since WebRPG Online went the way of the dodo, and FG has all the stuff I want, and none of the stuff I don't want. It'll take some setup, but every darn session takes setup.
That said, anyone who had already worked out a method for ORE pools, I'd love to hear from you!

You might want to PM Brenn, he did some work on an ORE ruleset, but abandoned the project. Might still have the code, details here. ("https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?18011-ORE-Passing-the-torch) It seems like he visits the forum every now and then.

To understand rulesets a little better I recently read Anatomy of a Ruleset (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/community/Anatomy_of_a_Ruleset.pdf) (in the FG Library) and it has a good and clear section on implementing custom dice and they can be used the same way as the standard dice. Skip forward to page 26.

Thanks for the lead. PM sent.
The nice thing about FG and ORE is I don't REALLY need a ruleset so much. It will be nice, but it's a luxury. rolling a handful of d10s is already something FG can do. Sorting and counting out sets would just be a bonus, as would a lot of the fiddlier bits.
My plan is to get the existing campaign set up, the important setting and character stuff, set up a few maps of common locations, etc. We'll transition to FG when that's ready and work on the ruleset can be ongoing from there.

[I originally posted this with the above in one post. The post that displayed when I was done showed the first quote and the second reply and nothing in between? Weird. So I broke them into two posts.]

In the next beta version of v3.0, I will be adding support for any numerical value for the /die command in v3.0 (CoreRPG ruleset and anything derived from it: 3.5E, PFRPG, 4E, C&C, CoC, Numenera). If the d# specified is not a valid physical die for that ruleset, a random number will be generated instead.

Thank you for the offer of help. I'm actually more than familiar with Fantasy Grounds 2. I introduced a DM of mine to it some years ago. He eventually picked up an Ultimate license, and we continued play a weekly game on it for a year or so. We made modifications to various rulesets to play Pathfinder and Labyrinth Lord prior to rulesets being available for either. Ie, I'm aware that it is highly customizable. I can code in multiple languages and work as an IT contractor, so I'm more than capable. The issue is that I have no time for that sort of thing anymore.
I am aware of the limitations of Roll20. To be honest, I HATE the UI of Roll20 and plenty of other things. I didn't intend to turn this into a Roll20 vs Fantasy Grounds thread. It is evident that there are two very different philosophies of how a VTT should work. I can say I consider buying Fantasy Grounds. I would never consider giving Roll20 much money, as the 'product' is quite unrefined.
I am glad to see FG2 being properly supported, as back in the pre 2.6 days there was some argument in my old group as to whether the platform had stalled.

Doug and I took over the company shortly after v2.6. We also felt it had stalled before that point.

Well that explains a lot! Good on you guys. I tell folks Fantasy Grounds is the best VTT available, and that wouldn't happen if it had not been for the updates it has received in the last few years.
Anyway, I will be reviewing my financial situation and look at purchasing an Ultimate license sometime this month. And heck if that happens, I just might go and write an unofficial ruleset for Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG after I get done with other projects.
