ok, so isn't there a demo version of this that I can play with other people and see how I like tabletop gaming before I buy it or...?

I mean, I searched in the downloads section already and under the demo tab is just maps. This whole program seems very cool and would like to purchase it anyways, but I first need to see how I like it, etc.

It is on the download page. you need someone to play with though, or you can check the program out just to see ow it works. Load a campaign and then start another and jpin locally to test how it looks from the GM (the first you launched) and the players side (the one you joined with).

Trouble? just ask :).

I've already tried to download that and the download is broken actually. haha, I probably should've mentioned that before, but it slipped my mind at the time.

also could I join games in the game calender section with this? and if not...any places you recommend I could get some help to try it out?

*edit* WAS broken...I guess its fixed now

With the demo (free version) you have to connect to a host running on a ultimate licens.

The versions are:

Free (also demo version, you can actually do alot with this, even play, but cannot save anything)
Lite (for players only)
Full (GM and Player)
Ultime (GM and player, a user with the free version can play)

So find a game with a GM with an ultimate licens. There are a lot of those. I have read also that many accept that you just drop in for a session and watch, after you make an appointment with the GM of course ;).

so the only real difference between free and player versions are saving stats and character? also if I bought the Lite version, could I upgrade to Full later on for a lower price or would you still have to pay the full amount?

The Lite license allows you to connect with any GM, whether they have the Full or Ultimate license. The Unregistered (free) license allows connection to a GM with the Ultimate license, but not to a Full one (except for demo purposes IIRC). Thus if you want to have more games available to play in, get a Lite license.

With a Lite license you can later upgrade to Full, but the price difference (combined with the cost of the Lite license) is slightly higher than if you buy the Full right away.

Not being able to save is a major "issue" ;).

oh yeah, I bet...I HATE losing save data and not having it at all would be worse, but its enough to test the waters though

Absolutly. I did my own like that. running the demo with a GM host and a locally connected client and just going through the tutorials I could find and looking at the Library. Notice that while I personally think the videos made by users, found on the download page is excellent, some of them are made a lon time ago. FG2 is constantly getting better and better. Also the demo allows you to test D&D 3.5, Pathfinder and 4.0 but not the other rulesets (like Rolemaster and C&C).

you can find some excellent newer videos made in the different threads all around the forum. know there are some for Rolemaster, that made all the difference to me.

To be clear, it means you can't save a character on you computer. If you were to try out a game using ultimate they would still have your character. The demo version simply stops any permanence on your side/computer.

Is there any specific ruleset you are interested in? Some functionality is ruleset specific so it can be good to get a tutorial with the ruleset you want to use.

not particularly since eventually I would want to try and play them all, but the closest exposure I have to tabletop gaming is the Baldur's Gate or Planescape CRPG games, but I heard that the ruleset is outdated now or not supported by this program? but I guess Pathfinder would be a good place to start unless you recommend something else.

Baldur's Gate and Planescape were based on the AD&D 2nd edition rules, so the Fantasy Grounds 3.5e/Pathfinder ruleset will be the closest of the mainstream rulesets and will have a lot of base concepts that you're familiar with.

How much different is 4E compared to Pathfinder/3.5 ruleset? do you think that would be just as easy to jump into? I mainly say this because I just watched and was looking through the tutorials on this website and most are about 4E.

The FG functionality within the 3.5e and 4e rulesets is essentially the same - any differences are basically due to the differences in the actual 3.5e and 4e rules.

@dulux-oz

I just found your videos, and I have to say that I really appreciate the effort you have made. I especially like the fact that they are "beginner level". I've got a few old gamer friends that will certainly benefit from the newbie-esque approach.

Even more horrifying is that I fear that the era of the competent computer user is almost over (brief as it was). With the ever increasing amount of Tablets, smartphones etc. on the market the computer literacy of the end user will continue to decline. Your videos address this need.
