I've never played Savage Worlds before but have heard good things about it and would like to finally take the plunge.

When I buy the ruleset, is there a .pdf of the rules included anywhere?

If not and I plan on GMing, do you think I need to buy the .pdf seperately from say, RPGNow?

Not a PDF, but the rules are included as library reference modules. This is probably not the ideal for reading and getting used to the rules, but will do if nothing else. The Savage Worlds Explorer rules were sold for around £10/$10 (yes, exchange rates don't seem to figure there) in digest paper form. Not sure about the newer deluxe rules. A PDF of the rules can be got, as you say, from RPGNow/ DriveThruRPG.

The PDF price is the same as the book price.

To echo the words already said, the in-game reference is good for quick rules reference (how do grapples work again ?) and time-saving (copy-and-paste edges / hindrances / weapons / full-stated monsters).

But whilst it IS a complete copy of the rulebook, word for word, I suspect you would get a much richer and easier learning experience by picking up a copy of the Savage Worlds Deluxe explorers edition for 10 of "your local units of currency" (!) in either dead tree or electronic format.

I know Pinnacle now promote FGII on their homepage (which is great) - I wonder if there might be a future day where a PDF + FGII ruleset/module bundle might be sold ?! In any case, that day is certainly not now - but Savage Worlds core rulebooks are very cheap, and Savage Worlds ruleset is being actively improved by a few memebers of the forums, so it's still an utter bargain I believe.

I'd suggest the "dead tree" format ("dead tree?"). That, some dice, a deck of cards, and you should be well on your way to high adventure. Then you have (a) A very good idea of what Savage Worlds is about (and how the encounters are put together). (b) a reason to buy one of the best systems for your dollar.

In the end, it's your dollar.:)

Thanks guys - wound up picking up a hardcopy from my LGS so I could have it sitting by the computer, and picked up the PDF of Hellfrost. Good stuff!
