Hey!

The session scheduled in the calendar on Saturday, Feb 16, but in the description above, you're saying Sunday, Feb 17. Which one of the two is correct?

Both :)

Sunday 17th Feburary 2:00am GMT = Saturday 16th Feburary 6:00pm PST

It is Sunday Feb 17th 2:00 am GMT (London)

and Saturday Feb 16th 6:00pm PST (Pacific Time) where I am. They suggest that you put the times in GMT, I am used to dealing in PST.

For info: players, if you've played this scenario before you cannot replay for credit, in fact you really shouldn't replay at all unless it is to make a minimum legal table.

Thanks, I was also looking for the rare chance someone GM'd it and hadn't played and wanted the player credit. If I knew in advance I might trust the person enough to keep quiet and follow the party lead.

First intelligence-based sorcerer I have come across, I read up on it after I saw your character. I can understand why you would specialize on ray spells.

Ya I'm going to need to know what the tools are and it is unlikely that they are going to affect all aspects of the skill so you will probably have to have them as a mod rather than added into your total skill. For example a Masterwork balance pole would probably add +2 acrobatics for walking a narrow plank but would not help you jump or maneuver in combat to avoid a AOE.

Hi,

Similarly I've remade a character that I don't think I'll play again (used 0 consumables).

Here is the thread I basically asked permission for these for my other character. I have added the same tools. Three of the tools are for perception (listening, seeing, and smell) was running outta money so didn't buy the other 2 senses listed.

I made that thread so I would run into big discussion when playing about this. The Venture Lieutenant Trenloe has given his blessing on them.

I think Winged1 was more referring to letting him know when you're using the masterwork tools so he can judge if the situation is appropriate. Don't apply the +2 as a permanent bonus to your skill lists, check with the GM that it is OK to use the masterwork tool for a certain situation and then apply the +2 as a one off modification (using the modification box).

At least, I hope that's what Winged1 was saying... :)

That is mostly what I was saying. :)

Looking at True shot's specifics:
Disguise Kit - No problem it is in the books, grants you a +2 circumstance bonus for facial disguises (not going to help you look like a Dwarf)
Sticky gloves for slight of hand, I can see them giving you a +2 circumstance bonus for picking pockets, not for slipping a note in a pocket.
Perception skills - magnifying glass +2 for vision of small objects 100gp, Spy Glass bonus to vision long distance 1000 gp, Ear trumpet 5 gp bonus to listen through doors, (these are all similar to tools in the real world and have no "magical effects")
Acrobatics - I can see foot gear that increases your traction could be useful for some acrobatic maneuvers like jumping, but to me the main part of avoiding a AOE would be mobility, so clothing the allows you to move freely like a martial arts gi would be closer but of course this would be negated by armor.
UMD - no mater how I look at that skill I can't think of a non magical tool that would help you with it, I can't see the wand slipping out of your fingers being a big reason for failing the skill. I could see a large reference book that you could use to help use magical devices out of combat when you have lots of time to read.

I do follow the approved parts of the books but reserve the right to use my judgement in the grey areas.

My concern was why I originally made that other post. I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on Masterwork tools then no GM except them. What I got from the Venture Lieutenant and the other FG's GM's was that the ones I came up with were pretty legit for PFS. Again, its a pain that they have added a MW tool option and they're available for every skill yet some GM's aren't allowing them because of the verb-age. I guess I should have just not bought them so I wouldn't have to deal with this in every game. Not sure why Paizo would put something out there that has so much guesswork/interpretation involve.

Wizards hat or fake Wizards beard for UMD checks for arcane items, i've read a similar example for emulating dwarven items with fake dwarven beards somewhere :)

I think the RAW around masterwork items are far too vague and this issue arises far too often. Paizo should of made clearer rules for PFS play by now, even if it is to just outright ban them.

I can see both sides of the debate - DM's who are overly pedantic regarding a minor bonus of +2 to a skill check vs a 50gp price tag that is really far too cheap (when a +5 skill bonus magic item which costs 2.5k).

Yes I agree either approve or ban, but they should make it definitive!

Yes I agree either approve or ban, but they should make it definitive!

I don't consider a +2 bonus that minor, that is a good trait, or a low level feat, or from a +4 stat increase, or two levels of Favored Bonuses. All for a low cost of 50 gp when a Magnify glass only gives you a +2 "circumstance" (only to small or highly detailed) to appraise for 100 gp.

On the approve or ban, if they could write every instance into a rule you wouldn't need a GM you could do it all with a computer. The more rules you have the more it stifles player and GM creativity. I love the universal rules for Pathfinder Society and I think it is great for keeping all the important things like levels, gold and magic items in balance across multiple GMs. That they don't worry about 50gp items and focus on the big stuff is a good thing.

At the very least you should be happy that I told you in advance instead of arguing in the game when the rest of the players want to play (PS I only give a 2 min window for explaining your point on a rule during game time). Now you can make the informed decision on whether you want to play and hope that next GM is less "pedantic", or find a session more to your liking.

Trenloe
February 15th, 2013, 15:32
As mentioned a number of times before on this specific point - it is the GMs decision on when masterwork tools can be used. Don't apply the +2 to your skill on the character sheet - ask the GM if you can use the tool and apply the +2 bonus in the modifier box.

It is good that we can debate this outside of a game, but it is quite clear in the rules that it is up to the GM. It doesn't matter if 25 Venture Officers and 99 GMs you've played with let you use them often, if the GM you are playing with doesn't think the tool is specific to the situation you want to use if for then abide by their decision and keep playing.

Winged1 is not saying he is not allowing masterwork tools full stop, he is just saying that there are some skills and usage where he won't allow their use. I'd say exactly the same when I'm running a game.

I'll draw your attention to the entry in Ultimate Equipment again - there is a line that says "Some skills have no appropriate tool or masterwork tool..." so it is well within a GMs right to say "You know what, I honestly can't see where your sticky gloves will help with your UMD check with a wand, sorry".

This has really been debated enough now - please let each GM make their own decision on this and not give them a hard time. We have taken up enough of Winged1's adventure recruitment thread. If you really want to keep debating this please move to here: http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18149

Now you can make the informed decision on whether you want to play and hope that next GM is less "pedantic", or find a session more to your liking.

I think you may have taken this a bit personal which was not my intention. I stated that before I bought the items I asked the Venture Lieutenant that, for the most part, presides over FG's and the other majority of GM's that run games here, what their thoughts were. Obviously i disagreed with the VL in regards to needing 5 different MW tools for one perception check, but I went with it because most others agreed with him. I was trying to get around having to deal with this with every single GM and try to get a "authoritative ruling" so to speak.

I don't mind not using them at all if that's what you would like. As I showed you from my list, I'm not sure what I would/wouldn't be allowed to use.

Just to clarify, I would never argue with you or anyone else during a game and ruin the experience, that's what forums are for :)

Lastly I would say this from my experience and from other I've talk to, the GM's with the least "I'm in Charge, It's My Way or the Highway" attitude are always the funnest and most well liked in seems. Trust me I understand that GM's have to make calls in regards to situations, but micromanaging every single action can bog down the fun of the game.

Just my thoughts, Look forward to the game Sat. if your still ok with me playing.

EDIT: oops must have been in middle of typing when Trenloe posted, I wont post anymore with regard to this matter. Thanks

I still don't have my Chronicle sheet from my Wednesday's game with hawkwind.

I sent him a message and asked that he please send it to me if possible, but so far no response.

I'm uploading everything you requested in case he responds in the next several hours. The only difference you would expect to see is +gp earned, and 2 prestige earned, and 2 prestige spent on a wand of cure light wounds.

I guess if I can't get my sheet I'll resign since playing wtihout is sort of messy and a pain for you I'm sure. I hope I don't have to do that though, this session sounds interesting and fun.

The Chronicle I uploaded is from Trueshots game a couple weeks back.

No problem playing without the last chronicle you just won't be able to use it for this session, the problem will be giving you the chronicle from this session. It will have the total you have earned so far so we can either wait until you get you last chronicle before I give you this one, or we can do this one up based on the session you sent me.

Hope that works for you.

You should be OK. Some GM's take longer than others to return chronicles. My goal is to do them after the game and post immediately or within 24 hours. But nevertheless this shouldn't keep you from playing in a game, say, the very next day. Most all the Gm's are aware of this issue and are more than happy to accommodate you and to work with your previous GM to guarantee the information is posted correctly at some time or another. I was with you and so were a couple other guys that are playing tonight, we can vouch for you the XP/PP you earned in your last game :) Hope your still playing, see ya tonight!

Yes, I'm just getting edgy because I'm headed to a Con on Thursday and already signed up for some games. While it seems most people here know others, it's probably going to be a bit difficult if I can't get everything sorted out by then. I'd like to do the following if the income from the past session was sufficient:

Purchase and Sales after the Frostfur captives.

Sell:
Scale Mail @50% +25gp

Buy:
Full Plate -1,500gp
Light Crossbow -35gp
Light Mace -5gp
Crossbow Bolts(x10) -1sp

Squire Attendant -4pp
Wand of Cure Light Wounds -2pp

If hawk didn't get the chronicle right you need to make sure he gets it right before handing to next gm. Also you are still level one so all your sells are at 100% not 50%. Remember if this was you last game before Turning level 2, this is you last chance to change anything about your character. You can change anything and everything but you have to do it before you play in it first game as level two.

In defense of GM's, they aren't always going to get the info right. That's why players should always check the chronicles to make sure. I've never had any problems with GM's not wanting or willing to correct mistakes. I do wish all GM's would do their chronicles within 24 hours of the game ending. If someone only plays one toon and the GM takes a week or so to do the chronicle, that player can't play until they have completed the chronicle. Yes, it can be frustrating. But try to be patient, it will all work out :)

Trenloe
February 19th, 2013, 00:38
As Trueshots has said - please be patient with GMs. There is a lot of overhead for GMs to do after a PFS session has concluded. If the chronicle sheet the GM provides you with is incorrect politely let them know and give them time to correct it.

GMs go to a lot of effort to run games for you players, so help them out and give them the time they need to complete the additional admin that comes with Pathfinder Society. Without GMs you won't be playing...

Trueshots
February 19th, 2013, 00:49
Just one more thing. The more information you can provide to the GM after the game the easier it is on the GM. If a player doesn't come up with a buy/sell list for days after the game, the chronicle can't be finished til the GM has that. If you notice a lot of the Vet players will post all kinds of info on the thread after the game is finished to help with the expediting of the chronicle sheet. These things include stuff like:

previous xp
pfs #
previous pp
previous fame
previous gold
inventory changes
day job rolls
pp spent
items used during game ( ex. wand of cure light wounds -6 charges)

This isn't a complete list, the more detailed the easier it is on the GM.

And I appreciate it. But try to understand my point of view. I paid in advance to attend a con. I even had to pay (even if it was only a few bucks) to sit at an event table to play. I did not think that a game I played 8 and 15 days prior would be threatening to make a mess out of my plans, not to mention now spending how much time/effort trying to get a sheet of paper.

The upside of the whole thing is it's still low enough tier that I could roll up another character, but even then it is not what I wanted to do.

If I have to leave a month between games to guarantee I can get what I need to progress my character the whole thing loses its appeal.
