Hey guys,

So whenever I play a VTT I always like to listen to some music, for some reason it helps me get into the mood of the game a little better.

Of course, dubstep and any hardcore music doesn't help ADD to the mood so I've been looking around youtube for some great RPG music/instrumentals.
Here's a couple of links I've found.
I'll update the list if this gets enough interest from the community.

If you find any other great compilations or RP tracks let me know!

Movie music is usually a good place to start, since most is instrumental. Try the old Conan movies, and Lord of the Rings.

During my 3.5 Ravenloft campaign I used various haunted house and Midnight Syndicate tracks. I also agree with moon_wizard on the movie music. I find that the old Conan Score, Lord of the Rings, Galidator and Excalibur work wonders.

For more of a heavy metal fantasy feel I use Blind Guardian, Symphony X, and the scores to 300 and the remake of Clash of the Titans.

There are lots of storm and forest ambient sounds on you tube that are good too :)

I have over 70 movie cds some are dire and im embarrassed to own them lol but most are pretty decent.

Since we use Ts3 while playing fantasy grounds I stream some music in the background for atmosphere in some of my games. There is an awesome free plugin you can get for it.

You could also go with some progressive rock if you want to go for that 60s/70s Tolkien counterculture vibe.

The Court of the Crimson King wouldn't be a bad place to start.

We were only looking at this plugin last night. Is it difficult to set up? (It said something about a second or virtual client for TS3)

There are a few options. I use a 2nd TS3 client (a 2nd laptop running) as this allows me to control the music easily and doesn't get in the way of my already cluttered GM desktop. Also, a 2nd client results in the background music volume being controllable separately to the GM voice by each player - so players can adjust as necessary to make sure they can hear conversations above the background music. Another plus is that the GM gets to hear everything the same as the players.

Of course, if you don't have the option of another client - be it another computer/virtual machine then you may have to look at more of a soundboard option to play down the same channel as the GM, which you need to get a good balance otherwise people don't hear the mood music or can't hear you! :o

The version I downloaded and use was very simple to set up and use. As long as you have the compatible version of winamp.

As long as you have a Ts server running. I recommend one that is not run by your machine. We have our own paid for each month by our community. But fg here has one you can use. The music is streamed from your machine over an open mic in the background.

As for volume, you can control how loud it is for the players globally. You want it in the background so do a test and adjust until the players are happy they hear you over the music.

The plugin came with a easy set of directions. I cannot remember if it was a readme file or a link to the developers website and the instructions were there.

I have a terrible connection being in the valleys of south Wales, and this worked fine with 7 players connected.

Have fun

The tracks that come with the latest Elder Scrolls game are pretty good.
