If possible I need idiot-proof step-by-step instructions on how to revert from v.2.9.1 to v.2.8.1.

Can't say I've ever done this - so not much help, I'm afraid! I am intrigued what has caused you to need (or want) to do this though, if you don't mind me asking ?

A group I want to join is using the earlier version to which I cannot connect.

Ah - then I guess my question is targeted at them then ! The new FGII versions are typically backwads compatible with rulesets, so I wonder what is keeping them down a version (and then hitting multiple version problems like you are facing). Sorry I haven't got the answer for the downgrade.

There is no way to downgrade the FG client. It would require an older copy of the installer, which is not easily available to us since we archived it last year. Perhaps they have a copy of the old installer they can provide? If not, I might be able to dig one up, but it might take a while.
