So now that I am searching for a game for my kids, and my search for a FG game that matches my hectic life has been disappointing, I move on to the next thing:

Does anyone know of, or run, a play-by-email game?

I've played a few play-by-post games, rpol.net is a good place to look around.

There are lots of them out there and I have played in them and GMed them.

PBeM or PbP is great for roleplaying and getting into the character.

They tend to be very slow. Games tend to start out at a fast clip and then slowly fade away.

How long have you been trying to get a FG game with the kids going ? I found that once I got a few sessions of FG under my belt I could never really go back to pbp unless it was really the only option left to me. It can be fun, no doubt, but it can also turn into a real slog at times.

The game for the kids would be IRL. However, I've been trying to find a game compatible with my life for awhile. Non-geek wife and 3 kids don't make for a lot of wiggle room. Still wouldn't give it up :)

Insanity, I'll check out this rpol.net.

I have a non-geek wife and feel your pain.

I have run solo games of Pokémon Tabletop Adventures (https://forums.pokemontabletop.com/site/) via email. I haven't tried anything else that way, though. (I am also in a Play by Post game on the MTMJ forums (https://mtmjforum.sitex.us/index.php?board=25.0).)

I agree with the comments on character growth and pacing, though the pacing can pick up depending on schedules.

EDIT: Added link to PokTA.

Pokémon TA. That looks really interesting for the kids. They have just started getting into Pokémon. Thanks for mentioning it. :)

No problem. I've found that it's easier to work in more general terms for combat (don't really bother with range of movement and attacks at first, for example), and then slowly add more details as you go.

The game I'm currently running just started using maps. I make the grid in Paint, then use layers in GIMP to keep it up to date (then email the new image with my replies).

Just wanted to update. I found (I think from here) roleplayinggames.net. It's a fun place and if you're there I'm under the same handle.

Thanks again to everyone that helped!

Interesting. Thanks for letting us know. :)

There doesn't seem to be any PokTA out there currently, but I'll try to keep an eye out to see who's recruiting in the future.
