So how do most of you play?

Do you use icons that depict the creatures and players from overhead? This looks very good with the overhead view of the dungeons; however I have only been able to find a few pre-made overhead icons when searching online. Does anyone know of some good overhead icon libraries?

Or

Do you use icons that depict the creatures and players from their side? While this does not mesh well with the overhead view of the dungeons, I have played enough of the original Zelda series that this does not bother me:)

I have also considered using the images from the pathfinder bestiaries to create my own icons. Does anyone know if this has been done already? And before I start, does anyone know if the copyright laws of these books permit this? Of course I will not be attempting to make money, but could I play with these images with friends?

If the copyright laws do permit this, and if no one else has done this, I will start making these icons from the books, and I will share them with the community when I'm finished.

Devin Night's top-down tokens are magnificent: https://www.immortalnights.com/tokensite/tokenpacks.html
He also has a kickstarter on at the moment, I think.

It's generally fine for personal use. You should be okay because of the way FG sends stuff to the players' PCs - encrypted campaign files, not readable on the player's computer.

That is not fine though. That is distribution and is illegal.

Thanks for your response! I know copyright laws; especially with online gaming, get very confusing. My intentions were only friendly. I was not trying to make any money. I just wanted to save future people from the hassle of having to creating icons that I had already made.

Regardless thanks for the clarification! Much appreciated!

As for Devin's token those are nice, and arguably the best. I was having trouble finding any more without having to hire him personally. While I realize he is a freelance artist, my finances do not permit me to hire my personal freelance artist, maid, grounds keeper, hair stylist, or makeup artist. :)

You've missed Devin's kickstarter - I'm sure he'll release the tokens he's doing as a package later.

There is another amazing kickstarter going on now (see the link in my signatuure) by Shockbolt - info and a few examples in this thread: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17090

Tailz Wyldfurr does some others. Those are computer images, rather than hand-drawn.

If you use a smaller grid size you might find the head and should portrait style better. It's also the most easy styles to find or make a token yourself since all you need to do is crop an image from any graphic and google and the WotC site are your friends. TokenTool is easy to use but any art program will do the same thing. https://www.rptools.net/index.php?page=tokentool

You want you tokens to be all set to common scale to avoid having to individually re-size them. This scale will in turn effect the scale of the grid on your maps and the pixel and file size of your maps. You are likely going to have hundreds if not thousands of tokens so you should try to keep your file sizes as small as possible.
