Lately our group have had trouble getting together regularly to game. So I am not looking into the option of taking the game online for those days when we just don't have the time to meet up in real life.
The question is how much work is required to run FGII with rules that is not covered by any rules set? Our current campaign is a recently started Spacemaster: Privateers campaign.

at its simplest you need to find a ruleset with a similar character sheet.
manually manage the character sheet.
use teh chat window for dice rolls and share maps/images.
you would then do all your roll calculations etc manually as you do now.
use teamspeak or ventrillo or mumble or skype for chat...

Is SpaceMaster related to RoleMaster? If so, there's a RoleMaster ruleset already which might suffice.

Definitely check in with the Rolemaster group here. Not only is Rolemaster one of the most feature-rich of the rulesets on FG, it's also a pretty active group, and I believe has had some work done (unofficially) to implement the Spacemaster attack and critical tables. I think one of those guys ran a Spacemaster game for the recent FG virtual convention.

Yes the Rolemaster is related to Spacemaster. But the rule set covered is Rolemaster Classic and Spacemaster: Privateers is more related to Rolemaster Fantasy Role Playing. It is still mostly the same but at the same time enough changes to cause some problems. Regardless I might get FGII either way since BRP, Rolemaster Classic and GURPS are other games we play and FGII does cover those systems.

I did run a SpaceMaster 2 game for FG Con using the RMC ruleset as a base. It was a lot of work getting it setup though. Some of the RMC tables were the same as the SM2 tables so I was able to reuse them. I included 6 attack tables, the stun critical and the modern weapons fumble table. I created an extension that handled the changes to the metric system and a couple other minor things.
The RMC ruleset could be used for Privateers. Ardem has created a RMFRP extension that handles the difference in stat bonuses along with some other RMFRP specific things. This should help with some of the difference between RMC and Privateers. It should at least give you a start on storing the characters in FG. You would need to manually create the skills and equipment though.
The hardest part would be getting the different SM Privateers specific tables entered into a library module that FG could use. It would speed things up if you had a library module of with the tables but you could always just look them up like you would if you were playing face to face.
I am willing to help point you in the right direction if you have any questions or need any help getting it working.
