Is there a way to change the "GM" icon picture? Currently running the Marvel Heroic game and wanted to add The Watcher picture instead.

Thanks!

Look for the portrait_gm_token.png file in the icons folder of the ruleset.

Thanks for your help. Can't seem to find the "icons" folder or the "ruleset" folder (using the 4E version that came with Fantasy Grounds).

pjrake,

The file you're showing isn't actually the ruleset, that's the FG application data folder. I *believe* the 4e ruleset is now a .pak file in the FGII programs folder. You can change the .pak file extension to .zip and open the folder with any zip access program and change it back when you're done making changes. Inside there you will find icons folder and .png file Valarian referenced.

Cheers!

It would be best to copy the 4e.pak (found in the FG2 installation directory - under Program Files). Then change to .zip and unpack. Copy the contents to a my4e folder under the "rulesets" folder in the Application data folder. If this doesn't exist, just create it - under the folder you took the screenshot of above.

Of course, all this will only work if you've got the Full or Ultimate version and can create a campaign.

Will try again a bit later (got frustrated! lol)

Keep at it ;). Following Valarians way IS the best (you wont edit the core files of the program). But, Valarian while I agree this is the best way, it has a tiny "flaw" in that it can only be used for a new campaign... Or that is, they only way I know atm :).

editing the "core" file can be a bit tricky I agree, but:

1.)make a copy of your .pak file (just in case.)
2.)rename the original file from .pak to .zip.
3.)right click the file and show properties on the file and make sure you have full acces to the file! I can show you how if you dont know how.
4.) open the zip file and find the icon here \graphics\icons\portrait_gm_token.png. Replace it with your icon.
5.) rename the .zip to .pak.

and that should do it.

I now have the eye of sauron as a GM icon ;).

If the campaign is basically on the same ruleset (not making structural changes to the character record), you can just copy the db.xml from the old campaign folder (based on the 4e ruleset) to the new one (based on the copy).

Cool, thanks :). I had an idea it was doable with something like that.

That's awesome!

Well, I went back and got farther, but got stuck when I tried to rename the 4E.zip back to 4E.pak.

I'm using WinRAR to unzip and change the portrait_gm_token.png. But when I go back to rename it; it still looks like a rar file. On another occasion, it looked like a regular folder.

Just use the normal Windows zip compression archive. The base.xml file should be in the top level of the zip file, not in any subfolder. As mentioned above, the best method is to copy the pak file before changing it.

Glad I copied it before replacing it :)

Will try the Windows zip now...

If you're working on a copy, you don't need to zip it back up and rename. The original 4e.pak should stay in the installation directory. The copied files (unzipped) should go in to the rulesets folder in the Application directory, under a folder like "my4e".

Dude, I gave up :( I couldn't find a ruleset folder, so I created one.

But thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it. I'll get to like the little bluish 'GM' icon :)

The folder needs to be "rulesets", not "ruleset"

Take the attached zip file and extract it in your extensions directory. Replace the icon in the included "icons" directory with the one you want to use. When you want to change your icon, restart your campaign, selecting "Replace GM Token" from the extensions list in the startup screen.

GM Icon.zip (https://s3.silent-tower.org/supported/GM%20Icon.zip)

I did that, but no new extensions show up when I restarted the program.

It is a .xml file, not a .ext file, so it does not show up in the list of available extensions.

Create a folder under your extensions folder and put the xml and icons folder into it.

Okay, now it appeared in my extensions for the campaign when I reloaded the program.

But it is still showing the default GM icon, even though I changed the one in the Icons folder to the one that I wanted.

I tried a couple of times (didn't overwrite the png image) and same result.

No, unzip the file I provided into a directory with the same name as the zip file ("GM Icon"). Then it will show up on your list of extensions. Put the icon you want in the icons subdirectory of this folder, and the next time you start FG, you will have the icon you want. In the future, changing that icon will replace it for games that are using this extension.

Having the extension out there with the ".ext" name means that it will always use the one packed in the.ext file.

Your "GM Icon" folder should contain the .xml from the zip file, plus an icons directory. The default icon for the gm is currently in the icons directory.

Actually, in this case he wants to have the extension unpacked so that the icon can be easily replaced.

I did unzip the file... then replaced the .png in the folder that it created... and then renamed the zip file to a .ext file.

Skip the zip/ext entirely and just leave it a folder. It'll still be seen by FG and usable, but you'll be able to swap the img with a simple drag/drop or even setup a quick script to do so.

So I would just delete the zip/ext file, leaving behind the folder with the png image in it, and then I would somehow be able to select it as my GM icon when I was in FG?

Just leave it unzipped, and you'll be able to drag and drop a new icon whenever you want. If an extension is unzipped, it loads the unzipped version by preference, and leaving it unzipped allows you to easily replace the icon whenever you feel like it.

Ahhh.. so I can remove the folder that it created when I originally unzipped it, and just replace the png file in the zip file.

I will definitely be trying that today. :)

No, you just unzip it into a folder called "GM Icon". Within this folder is the .xml, and a folder called "icons". Within the icons folder is a .png. After you've created that directory structure (which you should get by just right-clicking on the original .zip file and selecting "Extract All") you can remove any files named "GM Icon.ext" or "GM Icon.zip". You want to leave it as a folder within the extensions directory so that you can just drag and drop new gm icons into that icons folder.

I guess I should have included instructions.

Download .zip file into your extensions directory
Bring up a folder viewer and navigate to your extensions directory
Right click on .zip and select "Extract All"
Copy your wanted GM Icon into the "icons" directory within the extracted folder, using the same name name as the existing icon
Select "Replace GM Token" from the extensions list next time you start your campaign
Changing the icon within the icons folder in the future will change the token used the next time FG is started with that extension active

I finally figured out my issue. My ZIP program didn't have an "Extract All" option, so I was just letting it extract to the main extension folder itself (so that the xml file was in the extensions folder, with the icon folder there as well). When I let it extract to a folder called "GM Icon" within the extensions folder, everything worked as advertised.

Thanks for the help on this, everyone. :)

Hi :)

Thanks for that extension :) With the new version v3.3.7 this extension does not work anymore, but I am not sure if this is only due to me; wanted to tell write this here, just in case someone wonders what happened :)

Best,

Kelrugem

EDIT: I guess this is due to the little changes about the gm icons in the chat (the question mark is now the crossed eye), so the gm portrait file seems not to be there anymore (and is not displayed) :)

EDIT2: Okay, nevermind, it is due to me :D In some other campaign without extensions it still works :D For completeness: It does not work with the hero point extension (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?28660-Hero-Points-Extension-for-CoreRPG-(3-5E-4E-PFRPG-CoC-CnC) ). I try to fix that :)

Thanks helped me in 2020 along with https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?27261-Extension-to-change-GM-portrait&p=243752&viewfull=1#post243752

Whoa! TIL you can leave a FG ext folder unzipped for ease of swapping graphics and the program still uses it correctly! Thanks y'all, super helpful.
