Its my first time doing Pathfinder, and first time using Fantasy Grounds for a game and I'm pretty excited. My players voted on a pirate style game so it should be fun. Any advice particular to Pathfinder for running a sea-faring campaign, or fantasy grounds in general?

So far we have a gnome oracle, half-elf monk, Ulfen gunslinger, and my wife is working on a drunken brute (probably human).

This may not help in terms of using FG, but when my group was playing Rogue Trader we used Vassal (https://www.vassalengine.org/) when there was (space)ship combat. I would think the same could be used for pirate naval combats, or you could just have a big open map with fitting tokens inside FG.

If that was what you were looking for. ^^;

Wow that looks like an intense program. How hard would it be to load a map of the inner sea region? It looks great for long distance chase scenes by boat or to track certain politics.

Do most people situate Pathfinder setting games after Aroden fell? I like the related mish-mash of religions and whatnot (especially what happened to Cheliax) but I don't think I want an epic storyline built around his return, or anything of the sort. Also, am I right in assuming that those who continue to worship him don't receive spells?

Personally I've only GMed APs, thus in 4708++. However for Golarion related questions I'd go to paizo.com. ^^;

I haven't tried to use a custom map in Vassal, but I believe you can edit the source file of whichever system you use (e.g. Battle Fleet Gothic) and include the Inner Sea map as a png.

Paizo publishing just released the Pathfinder Player Companion: Pirates of the Inner Sea. (https://paizo.com/products/btpy8qif?Pathfinder-Player-Companion-Pirates-of-the-Inner-Sea)

There is also some info in these......

The new adventure path coming this month is Skulls and Shackles (https://paizo.com/pathfinder/adventurePath/skullAndShackles) and IIRC will include navel combat rules in one of the books.

The Ultimate Combat (https://paizo.com/products/btpy8mcz?Pathfinder-Roleplaying-Game-Ultimate-Combat) also has some rules for Vehicle combat along with some stats.

For advice, try to sit in on someone's Pathfinder game. Most GM's don't mind having an observer. Try to do this both before you run your game and then after you run your game. The next thing is just to relax and have fun with it, sure - there are going to be things you don't know how to do in the beginning but everyone knows how to throw dice and read a character sheet.

On the Pirates game you are probably going to want a ship in digital form. I'm not sure if Pathfinder uses cannons or not. SkeltonKey Games has a ship that has either configuration though it is a large one. You can get a digital version from Tiamat: https://www.rpgobjects.com/tiamat/index.php
On the Tiamat page click on the center tab and then Click on Sea Ship and then click on the Apply Filter button. If you are ok with cannons there are pirate ships on rpgnow.com as well.

Unfortunately you've missed the chance to contribute, but keep an eye on this kickstarter entry from the guys at ENWorld:

I'm amazed how quick the replies came and how friendly everyone is here. :)

@ madman - wow, now that is coincidental. Honestly it was kind of random that it turned out to be a pirate themed game. I ran one in person ages ago, 3.5 and in person and I guess it made an impression. Made some major mistakes back then like letting the group grow to like, all of varying role playing experiences, and even some personal issues worked in. This time around I'm keeping the group trimmed. And thanks for pointing me in the direction of those products.

@ Griogre - I would like to sit in for someone running a game. As it is I listen occasionally to people playing via podcasts, so why not do it live! I guess I'd avoid asking questions to the GM like "wait wait, how did you link that?" but it probably would give me an idea of the capabilities of FG.

I've made a couple of generic water images, one for combat scale, the other for ship position. I then made a ship using pyromancer's and scaled it to a token as well to use the large version in combat and the token in relative water position. Too bad I can't individually scale tokens though, and have it all in one image with the player tokens riding the larger token.

@ Trenloe - Will do :pirate: .

I can't comment for the quality of the above, but at least worth a look...

I would be happy to answer some questions about FG, just find me on skype. I will load up a game and go over what ever you like. (madmanfg2) is my skype name.

Chris

Oh and you can scale any token individually.

As Madman say, you can individually scale a token - hover over the token with the mouse and hold CTRL and then use the mouse wheel to scale up or down.

If you're going to use a ship as a token (Which is a cool idea) have a look at the Enhanced images extension: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15647

This gives you 3 layers that you can put tokens on - which helps to avoid token stacking issues you will have if they are all on one layer. There are a couple of issues with it (the mask is only applied on the base layer and the grid on the top 2 layers) but it's still very useful, especially for messing about on the water! :)
