There doesn't seem to be a section in the 3.5E User Guide explaining Combat Encounters. It's fairly self-explanatory, of course, though I'm not sure what the "Placement" line is for - perhaps this is used to indicate where tokens will appear when the NPCs are added to the Combat Tracker?

Shouldn't "Challenge Rating" at the top be "Encounter Level"?

the placement line shows one copy of the token for every combatant in the encounter (so if you have one monster set to have 5 copies then 5 token images will be shown on this line)

these images can be dragged to any map to "Pre-place" the token.
when you close the encounter window these "token images" disappear, but when you hit the add to CT button, the tokens appear again on the map, in the correct places and are linked to the CT entries .

This means you can pre-place all encounters ahead of time, unlike the old version which would only allow placement one encounter at a time - after they had been added to the CT.
