View Full Version : Mongoose Traveller Ruleset

I'm working to convert the Classic Traveller module to the Mongoose Traveller ruleset. Some of my goals with this include:

1) Tweak the Character sheet to reflect the changes in mTrav. For example, skill rolls should include a characteristic modifier, but this can change depending on the way the skill is used.

2) Tweak the starship equipment sheets to reflect mTrav changes.

3) Turn the Mongoose Traveller SRD into a Library module that would, ideally, include weapons and other equipment that can be dragged onto a character sheet or starship sheet.

4) Add utilities including random NPC generation, language/word generation, system generation, animal generation, and integrate those results into the database.

I'm new to creating stuff for FG, so I'm still struggling with some of the basic concepts. But I'll keep you posted as things go along. And feel free to add comments or suggestions!

Just a quick update...

I've been tweaking the character sheet, and the weapons frame. Still plenty of work to go on both of them.

I've tweaked the dock, resizing the dock icons to add two more. One is for Systems, the one below that is for utilities.
http://atlantagamer.net/work1.jpg

Only three utilities are shown in the image, which (when the scripts are perfected), will randomly generate words based on the language tables. Names, random NPCs, alien encounters, random star systems and available cargo scripts are on my list of things to add. The functionality will be there for planning a game session, as well as for situations where your players go in a direction you didn't anticipate.

now that's a great idea, actual tools for the gm to create worlds and ships and have them ready to go!!! the current ruleset has a starship sheet which is extremely useful and the planet sheet will be an awesome add-on. i really appreciate the time and effort you're putting into this!!!! :D

There is - over at the FG Wiki.

The main differences from CT and MongT is that there is a task resolution (and stat bonuses) in MongT and the combat is similar(ish) but the MongT initiative system is going to be the hard one to code and allow for all of the possibilities of changing initiative each round.

But, the CT ruleset could be a good place to start...

I am keen to play Traveller New Era with my friends and we are dispersed around the UK and Ireland so FG2 is the only practical way. So in the absence of mwbay I am keen to give the development of this ruleset a try.

I've done some modifications to FG2 in the past and have some XML knowledge (a little is dangerous, I know). What I lack is the experience of the Traveller New Era rules. I can read the rulebook but there are bound to be things I misunderstand or don't appreciate properly and so I will need some help and guidance?

So I'm looking for some help from the community on things like character sheet layouts, whats practical etc. I am happy to paste up my workings on here as long as the comments are constructive and we can reach a consensus.

Thoughts anyone?

Have you explored the possibility of creating an extension to the Classic Traveller ruleset that overrides the Classic Traveller ruleset where it needs to be overridden?

I've done that (partially at least) for Traveller 5 (using the beta rules).

IamGrays
August 24th, 2012, 11:02
I didn't think of that. Would a new ruleset be cleaner, I don't know the differences between the Classic Traveller and New Era?

I have made a start at the new ruleset but I'm away on vacation next week so won't do anything until the week after. I have been using bits from the Classic Traveller and d20 Modern rulesets to get me started.

OTH the main ruleswise difference is that Classic Traveller doesn't use any difficulty thresholds. But those aren't that easy too implement anyhow so I don't think that will be an issue. Other than that the various Traveller editions have used different sets of data for vehicles and such. Which means that any forms detailing such entities needs to be altered.

Actually, Traveller: The New Era (TNE) was significantly different from the other D6 based Travellers - it used the GDW house system (used in Twilight 2000, Dark Conspiracy, etc.). I don't have it with me so can't check, but I seem to remember the main dice for skill resolution was a D20.

Ok I am now beginning to realise how little I actually know about how FG2 is coded. This may take a while....

It's stupid little things that get you, for example where are the little lines for the name, race etc added cos mine are in the wrong place by a few pixels?

This is the problem with modifying other peoples rulesets, I will work it out it's just frustrating...

I believe that the template for "string_labeled" or "labeledstring" in most rulesets; and I believe the template creates and places a text widget with the field text. Try looking for this text in the 3.5E or 4E rulesets to see an example:

Ok I have made some progress (a little) and I am beginning to understand how the Classic ruleset works but now I need some Traveller New Era advice.

From what I have read in the core rulebook in a characters career they can move from service to service providing they qualify but in the Classic Traveller ruleset (and I don't have the classic rulebook) it appears that they only have one service and specialisation as it appears in the career summary at the top (see attachment).

So should I modify the career page to remove service and office/branch/arm from the summary window at the top and modify the term window under career history to look something like:

Term# Service xxxxxxxxxxxxx Specialisation xxxxxxxxxxxx
Commission/Promotion xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Advancement xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rank xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Notes, assignments, mishaps & events
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxx

Is this better/worse is there anything else I should include? Is there a better place I should be asking these sorts of questions?

Thanks for any help,
IamGrays

Yes, whatever I'd done so far should be passed on to the developer who picks it up. The character sheet and NPC sheet is done - though it probably needs to be moved on to the new Foundation Core as it's old tech now. The combat tracker needs doing. IIRC, I made a start on a module.

Last I read the books were going to be coming out in January. I don't have any of the beta material, so I'm using my classic books as a reference.

I'd love to help on an FGII project. Is Foundations a good place to start?

I've done an extension to the Classic Traveller ruleset that supports T5 (and I do have the Beta material). It presently a alpha release. It has a character sheet but items, NPCs and Ships needs to be modified. T5 needs no rules-automations. The rules are very simple. Add Stat + skill = Target Level. Roll a number of dice (more for difficult tasks, less for simpler) under the TL. Eg. for a routine task roll 2D under TL. If you don't have Skill Level = # of dice to roll, then you have to add 1D to the pool. Ig. if you lack the necessary skill things get more difficult.

Example: landing a spaceship is a routine task. Pilot and Dex are used. A PC with Dex 8 and Pilot 2 would have to roll under 10 with 2D. A PC with Dex 10 and Pilot 0 would have to roll under 10 with 3D.

The dicepools can easily be stored in hotkey slots. The CT ruleset is OGL, so is my extension. Drop me a message if you want a copy.

It seems that Mongoose is very restrictive with their version of Traveller. That's why you don't see any character generators etc for their version of the game on the Net. I would not be able to release anything for it unless it was an official Smiteworks ruleset.

I was going to do an official ruleset for Smiteworks but things sort of fell apart. Since I wouldn't be able to release the ruleset I was working on, I stopped making it and switched to Classic Traveller. After that, development sort of slowed to a crawl. The ruleset I've worked on is unfinished and has an uncertain future.

I hate companies that make a game then get all anal about their 'rights'. The very nature of an RPG is that the players are going mod it: adventures, campaigns, alternate rules, new items, npcs, creatures etc. Any company that wants to restrict what I make in their game system will lose me as a player.

I'd suggest forgetting Mongoose Traveller and playing Classic Traveller instead. Far Future Enterprises seems to be a lot more relaxed about people making things for Classic Traveller. You can also buy everything ever made for it on CD in pdf format for like $30.

Or, better yet, try something like Eclipse Phase. It is a very high quality rpg released under a creative commons license. This basically allows you to share anything, mod anything as long as you give credit and don't charge for it.

http://eclipsephase.com

Here is a link to one of the game designer's blog. They've released copies of some of the books officially. These pdfs put every other rpg pdf I've seen to shame. Very high quality stuff.

A very small subset of the rules.

Here is some relevant info from their Developer's pack.

"What Can’t I do?
The following is not permitted under the Traveller Developer’s Pack – if you wish to attempt one of these projects, you should contact Mongoose Publishing for further information at [email protected] This is not a comprehensive list, and you should get in contact if you want to do anything that is not covered by the Fair Use Policy or Logo Licences.

Publish material for older and out of print versions of Traveller, and release them commercially.
Publish software based on the current edition of Traveller.
Publish Original Traveller Universe material beyond the confines of the Fair Use Policy or Foreven Free Sector Logo Licence."

You want to deal with it? Go ahead. But I'm not interested.

Matt Sprange is pretty reasonable and has allowed publication of a basic community edition (no rules) version of a Traveller ruleset in the past. This had a character sheet and not much else (an extension of the old Foundation ruleset). There's also an agreement in place for an official Mongoose Traveller ruleset.

I also cannot find the offset information for the image, button, and text frame that go with that image above the chat frame.

Anyone know if it is possible to have a character pic that big and not goof up the little icon above the chat?

I guess what I want to do is resize the image to 72x72 when it appears above the chat box.

Classic Traveller was my base

I have changed quite a bit of the graphics (inspired by your adaptation), but when I tried to use a big rectangular character pic by changing portrait.png and its mask, it makes the pictures above the chatframe too large and stacks them on top of each other.

I really like the big pic on the character sheet, so I would like to get the program to rezize correctly. The other displays are not affected and work well (combat tracker, chat pic).

I messed with charsheet_portrait.lua but couldn't get anything to work with that script.

A group I am planning to Run Mongoose Traveller with via Fantasy Grounds II has expressed interest in playing A hard-sf game like Traveller in preference to using Savage Worlds High Space or Science Fiction Companion.

Yes, I have and Opening Library, there's nothing. I know it was serious work to get Classic to where it is, but I'm looking to make my own Mongoose ruleset, and get it going, since I'm shelling out for the monthly subscription, with a plan to go ultimate one time sub later this summer.

I know Marc is very on top of infringement and that's not my ultimate goal. But if a team could be formed to do this, and have it Mongoose approved, hey, right on, I'll join that team, and leave roll20 forever.

Failing that, I'm looking at Savage Worlds / High Space (as it arrives) or Sci fi companion to do my latest SFRPG campaign.

But I'm a Traveller superfan, so I'd like to make that happen, if the gate can thus be opened.

Morning folks,

I've been working on a FG licensed Mongoose Traveller ruleset (based on current, not beta rules) since November of last year. I spoke with Doug at FG to get approval and make sure I didn't repeat work that others had been working on etc.

Here's a thread I started on it. There's an update coming tonight as Damned (how do you link names?) has been working on a skin for the ruleset.

https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?27508-Traveller-%28Mongoose-Publications-version%29

So far so good with it, it's my first so a huge learning curve in respect of what goes 'where'. Still to get done is mostly linking of equipment/weapons/skills/psionic abilities and then the combat tracker. However I've got my test group playing through the character gen stuff this weekend, as that's all done and might just need the odd tweak.

Therefore I'm hoping that by the end of this month the hard work is done and then it's refining, however I have been warned that Combat Tracker is a right royal pain - we shall see.

Cheers
Colin
