Thought I'd post a link to a question about VTTs on Enworld.

Of course the link is to my rant :) but there are other messages too.

I've been posting in there.

As I mentioned in my last post I'm not too worried about what VTT is "better". I just want to encourage people to explore their options and try playing online with a VTT. FG has been fantastic to us, I recommend it, but most of all I recommend trying the online experience, no matter what you use to do it.

Yours was a very good rant.

:)

I decided to hop in as well. Trying to point out that the Price arguement was moot since if the 'Player' or 'Lite' version was removed, you wouldn't have the have the 'Full' version cheaper. You would just be forcing everyone to pay the full version price.

I was actually typing up a reply with essentially the same thing in it and then saw your post. The ultimate result of his argument would be removing the play only option, and I think it's better to have more options than less. Even if you removed the play only option and lowered the price on the full by half you'd still eventually have someone complaining that they have to buy the full version when all they wanted to do was play. There's just not a good solution without going completely free or exceptionally cheap. And I don't think a company should have to do that.

Hi!

For some, "free" trumps all other considerations, even usability or practicality.

I was on board for Maptools early on. I still think its probably the best tool for an actual face to face game since I like to project my maps via a digital projector.

Now for an ONLINE game its fantasy grounds hands down. I don't like Maptool frameworks. They require a learning curve I frankly don't have the time for and there are also a couple of them, so settling on the "right one" may involve additional time.

Also, I am mostly a DM, the only tool that has made my adventure making an easy and pleasurable experience has been FG (and I've tried virtually all of them across the years). I like having everything right in front of me just a link away. I don't want to have to deal with macros and scripts, I want that under the hood and integrated to the main program like FG does. The ability to make/parse modules and share with all people whom use FG is a great boon IMO.

For these things I would gladly pay, and I do, which is why I choose FG.

But we must keep in mind that for some NOT paying is more important than pertinent functionality. That's not wrong, its just preference and thats the context I read most threads or opinions as posted on the mentioned thread at ENWorld.

Thats very true, and its obviously that the primary instigator of that argument is of that mindset. They aren't interested in finding the best cost situation. They just want it all for free.

Regarding the price point between Full & Lite, I felt it was worth mentioning that your FLGS isn't going to give you the DMG & MM for free just because you're the DM, but you're still the only person that needs to buy them.

If that's an issue then make your group chip in for it. If it's not an issue then shut up about it.

Hell I GM'd Palladium (all of it) for years in high school through college--I accrued over $1500 in books in the end... and I bought maybe 1/3 of them myself. My players over the year would chip in to get me the books they were interested in, and I'd run the games. :P

Precisely. I pointed that out as well. In a tabletop setting, the cost has almost always been on the head of the DM. This is no different.

I chimed in on Enworld. Let me know if you see threads on any other forums related to VTTs. I like to share my background with everyone, just don't have the time to keep up on any other forums than this one. ;)

Interesting, I have invited you and many others to get involved in the VTT topics over at GamingArmy and none of you have ever come over and joined the discussions. The owner of BattleGrounds did... But noone from Fantasy Grounds community.

I'm hurt, I truly am. I think I am going to go drown my pain in a bottle of Rum.

I was probably neck deep in development, and letting the forums run on their own for a bit. I'm working for us at SmiteWorks to get better at forum response time, and external discussions. I'm about half way there.

Cheers,

Well at this point in our review process on GamingArmy, fantasy Grounds has a 3.7 out of 5 and Battlegrounds has a 4.6 out of 5. It is however noted many times that even with that I still chose Fantasy Grounds over BattleGrounds and that I highly recommend any serious gamer that can afford it to get both applications.

It is also mentioned that the majority of Fantasy Grounds lower scores are mostly things that have been inherited from the previous company and that I have every bit of faith in the new team to bring that score up to inline with BattleGrounds by the end of this year.

I have not done a review of todays release (and honestly wont for at least a week) I know new bugs will pop up over the next few days, and have faith that you will jump in and fix them, and want to give you that opportunity before I give you the new review.

I added my 3 cents (inflation and all that) to the thread also last nite. It's generated a nice amount of posts, which is a good thing
