View Full Version : Grid Adjustment

In the 4E Campaign Management tutorial video, I see a grid being created on one of the Kobold Hall maps, and then being adjusted (e.g. offset) using on-screen tools. However, when I create a grid on an image, I see no such options. The 4E user guide simply directs me to delete the grid and recreate it, which isn't terribly helpful. How do I access the adjustments displayed in the tutorial video?

Thanks,
Scott

Scott,

The videos that Xorn made are actually using the beta version of FG. My plan is to release the beta version in the next couple weeks. I usually try to run a few games with my own gaming group, in addition to all the volunteers in the community, in order to make sure that the beta is ready to go.

If you are interested in trying out the beta, check out these two threads.

@Moon. This is part of the Test version? Is it part of the new map tools?

Stitched you first need to set the grid as per the usual radial menu approach, once set the DM will see an extra grid icon appear in the new image toolbar (between the eraser and clear targets icons).

Clicking the grid icon (when present) will expand the toolbar with left, right,up and down controls which shifts the grid in said direction as well as an expand/contract set of icons which increase/decrease the grid size.

Clicking on the grid icon again will hide the adjustment controls.

Out of curiosity, does having to adjust and resize the grid, after doing it through the radial menu, happen a lot?

Depends on the image. I have found a lot of WotC official maps for example have an inconsistent grid size or alignment issues. I guess it depends on the quality of the source image.

For WotC maps taken from source PDFs in most cases the grid aligns fine for one region but is out in others forcing the DM and players to either live with a badly aligned grid or forcing constant disabling/resetting of the grid. Take a look in the Gallery for examples of what I'm talking about.

Its for this reason many DM's have historically opted to use maps with no grids, as getting them to overlay correctly using the older approach was painful.

Oh, I agree with that. It's why I have been adjusting the images by hand so that the grids are, somewhat, consistent; you can do this through pixel counts, etc.

So do the tools allow you to adjust X and Y independently (X=15, Y=13)?

I agree that it would be nicer if publishers had gridded and non-gridded versions of their maps; same for player versus GM ones.

Not that I could tell, it looks like x & y are adjusted at the same time atomically.

The controls allow you to shift the grid left, right, top and down and resize the grid by I presume a fixed pixel amount (1), but I haven't measured it.

The grid is a perfect square (x & y the same), and the adjustments are by 1 pixel.
