Constructing a reference module for inclusion of house rules etc.

i have been scannig the forums to work out how to create a reference module. The Xorn training vidieo on the /export command skirts around the additional export options.

there seems to be one way via /export using client with indexes option ... if correct what do i need to put in the additional /export parameters for it to work.

The other is to copy the XML guts of another base ref module and hack around with the XML ... this is not very appealing.

What is the 2010 best practice on this DM activity?

Export from inside FG is limited. It is mostly designed to make adventure modules. You can make material show up in the library but because it also shows up in in the desktop books this in not exactly optimal.

It's not pretty but indexing works well enough with entries in the storybook or images. Where it doesn't work well is with monsters/npcs and items. This has to do with most rulesets having nodes that automatically combine parts of these type of entries which means you get monsters and items with the same ID numbers combining data on one of their tabs.

So the best answer remains that, if possible, you should build your library referance modules by hand. It is pretty easy to copy the "guts" of a referance module of the type you want, delete the old entries and add new items. NPCs are particually easy to add this way because you can input them inside of FG and then just copy them from the campaign.xml file into the referance module only having to change the id number in the entry and then fixing the module so the library links work.
