View Full Version : New to FG: Play by post?

Hi, I am very interested in using FG for my campaign as my players are all on the west coast while I'm on the east coast (I moved away). We have a blog that is working well for the storyline, and I'd like to use FG for maps and combat. However, it seems that, like all other virtual tabletops I've looked into, FG is designed for realtime play. This is NOT what we want, because we're never all free at the same time to sit down and play.

What we are looking for is a play-by-post set-up, wherein the players can just log on, make their move if its their turn, and log out. Everything they did while logged on would need to be recorded, from moving their token around to what rolls they made. This is a much slower yet continuous method of play. I haven't yet used FG, but is it possible to do this? Would I have to leave my computer running as a server 24/7? Can anyone think of another resource that would better-suit our needs? We don't really need all the other features FG comes with, just a map with moveable tokens and something that logs rolls.

Thanks so much for any help you might be able to give.

Personal opinon, I dont think FG would be very useful for this. It's much more designed as a 'play it now' type application, not much of a background program. It would have the rolls logged, but I dont think it logs movement of tokens and the like.

Maptools might be more geared towards what you're looking at, but I'm not sure if it does everything either (I haven't used it much lately).

Invisible Castle (https://invisiblecastle.com/) works great for logging and verifying rolls for pbp and the like, though I don't have any suggestions for map/tokens.

The only way you could do something like this is if you left the program running and thats just not a good solution as it doesn't have features to meet that kind of need. Could it be coded up as an extension? Probably, but it would be something you'd have to make.

FGII is designed to simulate a group of people sitting at a table, playing a session of the game.

While I would love to have new customers, I don't believe FG is a good fit for what you are trying to accomplish. Fantasy Grounds is pretty heavily targeted towards interactive online gaming.

Obsidian Portal (https://www.obsidianportal.com/) might be your best bet for play-by-post. You get your own Forum, Adventure Log, Campaign Wiki - really neat site.

Thanks so much for all the honest and very helpful replies! If ever we want to supplement our play-by-post game with a sit-at-the-table virtual game, I'll definitely use FG!

Take care...

Hi Elementary, I agree with the others that this probably isn't what you're looking for, but having been searching through VTT's for the past few weeks, I do have one suggestion that looks at first glance like it's more usable for this:

https://www.rpgtonight.com/

It's not nearly as pretty or powerful as FGII, but it's all browser based, and I have read of people who do as you are wanting to. The games stay open for 12 (I think) hours at a time, and are renewed every time the GM logs in. It has capabilities for mapping and minis... and probably more, but it was not what I wanted, so I moved on quickly. But it is free, which is nice, so you can check it out without any problems. :-)

Edit: And if you still want to go a'searchin', the list that Battlegrounds has (I don't know how frequently it is updated) is massive and you might stumble upon something else there. https://www.battlegroundsgames.com/links.html
