I've played Hero Kids (https://herokidsrpg.blogspot.co.uk/) with my 5-year-old, and he seemed to really enjoy it! He asked to play, though...
You guys have convinced me. My girl's a smart wee lass, I'm sure she'll enjoying playing Adventure Time for real :)

Hi friends,
I´ve read in older posts that an official gumshoe-trail of cthulhu ruleset was in the works. I´m planning to run the new Dracula Dossier campaign, but it have too much work to do to expland the "things-to-do" list with additional ruleset-extension modifications and parsing stuff.
Is by any chance the ruleset still in the works?
Thanks!

There is a community version of the Trail of Cthulhu ruleset which is pretty good. I ran a session at FGCon7 using it. The official version is very much based on this one with some improvements and a full library. Unfortunately ill health has currently stopped development of that ruleset. Hoping things turn better for you soon Scott!

I´ll try to finish my NBA-Dracula Unredacted theme, and start entering the data for it. It´s coming really nice, but it needs some extra work

I noticed some adventure modules for sale on the FG web store marked as '5e Compatible'. Is that now a category which allows development of adventure modules and campaigns for use with the WOTC 5e rules, and if so, where can I find a list of do's and don'ts to allow development of FG materials for public sale based on "compatible" 5e rulesets? Or is this just something that the publishers of those materials online have brokered separately with WOTC?
Follow up question... for someone who plays mostly in the WOTC product arena, what would be the closest game-mechanic wise "open" system recommended. OGL for 3.5/4e, or just work with the Core RPG system in FG and develop the content for that instead?
Talking long range goals here, but just wondering what the learning curve is going to be to start making salable, distributable modules since I'm spending so much time setting up games in FG for my own crew, anyway.
Thanks.

This is an ongoing area we are exploring. The current publishers, and a few others are known publishers who have produced compatible works for Pathfinder and other systems and they are fluent in the requirements of producing compatible products that adhere to all copyright laws. These products are all available in print and/or PDF already and were not built specifically for Fantasy Grounds. We don't yet have any guidance for people who want to produce their own content and we want to avoid putting ourselves in a position where we are essentially telling people what is okay and what is not. For now, we plan to limit 5E compatible products in the store to those other companies who have done the due diligence and who have chosen to move forward under a strict set of requirements. They have essentially assumed that risk as a company that they've done everything properly. We would not want to assume the risk by expanding this to non-corporate entities at this time. Hopefully there will be some additional guidance released by Wizards of the Coast before long that will help make it easier for us to expand this further.

What is the etiquette and rights management like when converting existing copyrighted works that are for sale as PDFs or on dead tree versions? I just bought The Curse of Nineveh (https://shop.cubicle7store.com/The-Curse-of-Nineveh-PDF) for CoC as PDF, and will convert it for own use. But would be great for the community to get it out to everyone respecting everyone's IP rights.
Should I contact the publisher Cubicle7 myself, or ask FG devs to do that?
ddavison
January 9th, 2016, 14:28
It is usually best for us to contact the publisher directly. We will always need an agreement between SmiteWorks and the publisher of the game material that has been converted and most publishers I've spoken with prefer to deal with another business as opposed to an individual. Once it is near completion, you can email me and I can review it first as well.

Am I correct in assuming that now that the OGL and SRD are available for 5e that we FG GM's can write and develop modules using the SRD which could theoretically be offered for sale to the community on the FG store as modules, obeying the IP rules in the OGL and sticking to the content which is available via the SRD?
Just making sure I understand correctly before I devote any time to the enterprise. If I'm going to hop down from full 5e to the SRD for campaign development I'd like to be certain it can be distributed later for community availability.
Thanks!
ddavison
January 14th, 2016, 18:41
I believe that is correct. As long as you adhere to the license, which means including the OGL license and denoting what within your creations are Open Game Content, then you should be able to distribute those modules.
Trenloe
January 14th, 2016, 20:06
@Pacio49 - Doug's correct.
One thing you may not be aware of regarding the OGL - distributing products based on the OGL means that certain material you create for that product will also be OGL (system specific statistics - NPC stats, new spells, new abilities, etc.) - Section 1(d) of the OGL. The story and descriptive content remain your product identity (section 1(e) of the OGL), so your own creations: storyline/background/scenario/descriptive text and artwork/maps/tokens is covered by copyright. In theory, this means that some of your own OGL material might appear in another product released under the OGL, but it also means that you can use other people's OGL creations as well - you're not just restricted to the WotC released SRD (as long as you recognise the original product/s in Section 15 of the OGL reproduced in full in your product).
I'd recommend you spend some time reading/researching the OGL and understanding exactly what it means you can use from the SRD and other OGL products, what you can't use and also what it means for your product released under the OGL.

We added a section in the reference manual for each identifying what parts of our content were Open Gaming Content. For instance, the tokens we used for the NPCs are not OGC.

Not sure quite what you are saying... You added token images to the NPC's inthe SRD modules and you are saying that those images are not OGC? And that means that if we create content using those images we can't distribute it?
damned
January 15th, 2016, 04:29
You have to read the OGL and the SRD to see what they mean and what the requirements are.
The SRD does not contain any images including tokens. As in the Wizards produced the SRD. The FG module is the SRD + some tokens.
If you look in each of the SRD modules you will find an entry called Open Gaming License and another called Open Game Content.
When a publisher/hobbyist releases stuff under the OGL there is almost always stuff in there that belongs to that person/entity and they may release that as OGL or not - usually its not.
We will need to wait for an official SmiteWorks statement on the tokens but letter tokens are very easy to make. You will find several sets on these forums.
ddavison
January 15th, 2016, 04:53
Since the stats are OGC but the tokens are not, you would need to clear the tokens before distributing them. We have a license with Raymond to distribute those within FG, so we may be able to work out something here in the future. It's still all pretty new to us as well.
pacio49
January 15th, 2016, 16:55
Thanks for the input. I scanned the OGL and SRD once through already but haven't 'unpacked' what the license terms mean fully yet. It's on the list of things to do before starting development of any modules for public consumption.
Obviously this is going to be a process and there will be some learnings and best practices developed as we all move forward. Not looking for a quick solution. More thinking that it will take some good time (and play testing) to develop pay-worthy adventure modules in the first place.
With all of the mapping I throw into my modules already, adding in the creation of unique letter tokens isn't that bad of a lift. Maybe someone in the community (or even me if I have the time) will do up a set of "default" letter tokens that they'd be willing to share with a Creative Commons license that allows commercial use with Attribution, or somesuch. Just have to be clear about font ownership for that, I'd imagine, but once worked out it could be shared across the board as part of a 'FG Module Developer's Toolkit'.

Hey Doug - if you build a module using tokens from a token module (e.g. Raymond's tokens or the letter tokens included with FG) the graphics themselves aren't included in that module, purely links to the FG token modules they came from.
See the following as an example. These two NPCs and the test encounter are in a module I've just created:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/39085830/Screenshots/Fantasy%20Grounds/Module%20tokens.jpg
There is no artwork in the module - just the definition.xml and db.xml file. In the db.xml file any references to the tokens are directly to the FG module they came from:

In use, FG accesses these token modules for the graphic even if the module is not open within the campaign.
This makes it very easy to use existing FG standard tokens in a custom module, without including the actual token graphic/artwork.
Is this OK for commercial modules?

We had a good conversation with someone at Palladium several years back. I think the biggest challenge resulted in the state of the PDFs they had available. Most of their library was not in a clean digital format that would make conversion easy.
I recently received a Palladium newsletter stating that their base books and many of their Dimension/World books are on Drivethrough RPG as pdfs and they are adding about 3 a week. While I am presently using FG for D&D 5e, I would love to see the basic rule set and eventually the other books in FG. I am a bit skeptical in ever seeing this since Palladium has a less than stellar record when it comes to letting other people play in their sandbox... but would be thrilled if it happened.
Perhaps after seeing the larger companies like Paizo and Wizards of the Coast jump on board they will allow it. To be honest I never thought I would pay twice for the books (once for the physical Players Handbook and once for the digital content for FG) but I finally did. It would seem to be a good source of new income for people that bought the books 20 years ago and now want to use the content online.

The problem is not that pdfs are not available. The problem is that they are (most likely) poor quality. I'm guessing, since I don't have the pdfs in question, but I don't think I'm wrong in assuming that edits were made to the previous version pdf instead of using the sourcefiles to generate a new pdf. By editing the previous pdf directly, the publisher hopes to skip the expensive layout phase of the work of creating a pdf. And it's true; you can (but shouldn't!) band-aid some errors this way, and this is sometimes (rarely) the right answer when going to (brick and mortar) print. The problem is that the instant you do, for digital purposes, you end up with a pdf that is unusable except for viewing using a pdf viewer. It's garbage from that point on. Copy-paste selects lines in a random order. The author used an image of text to cover up a flaw, rather than selectable text. Etc. It's a nightmare, because now Smiteworks (or other party) has to manually reconstruct the entire book, introducing more human errors along the way. Proofreading is a tedious job that most brains cannot do well, and programmers doubly so, since our training takes us in the opposite direction. It's an expense the publisher should shoulder; they are the ones who took the shortcut in the first place, removing a significant portion of value in the process. (It's like trying to sell a cracked vase that's been glued back together.)
The upshot is, if the pdf is junkware, then one would be burdened with publisher-level proofreading/editing, which is a huge cost, and very much outside the expertise of programmers.
If you are reading this and wondering, "How am I supposed to create pdfs?" then I will tell you to throw out every notion of using a word processor to do it. Use a plain old text editor and a semantic markup format like Asciidoc to create your sourcefiles, and use a tool like Asciidoctor to output your pdfs. Asciidoc is really easy to learn and produces amazing output. Docbook is also acceptable, as is LaTex. Never edit an existing pdf; that way lies madness. If you must perform layout, it happens after your content files are correct; it's the very last step. Using Scribus or InDesign is not like editing a document in Word. People have careers based around InDesign. It's complex work. If you need that granularity of control over your pdf's layout (you probably don't) then you should hire an expert.

I think it was some time in 2010 or so when one of the head guys from Palladium came over to the FG booth and looked very impressed. I unfortunately lost his contact info or maybe I never received his business card, but I also remember him telling me that the PDFs were in a bad state and were just very rough scans of printed products. Scans are always challenging to work from and OCR of the text, especially for game systems if generally pretty poor. If they ever launched a Kickstarter to completely redo them in a new digital format, that would be a great opportunity to tackle an FG version simultaneously.

The owner is Kevin Siembieda. From what I hear everthing goes through him. I am not sure if its because of the unfortunate incident in 2006 (not sure about the exact date) but he is known to be very careful about intellectual property and not very supportive of Rifts character generators. I am sure theres a story behind it that I am not aware of.
I don't have his contact information;) Its certainly not on the website either. They do have a help page but its more in the form of a help desk ticket. I ordered something from them a few months ago and they were very quick and responsive. However, I have no idea how they would respond to a request directly to Kevin. While I would love to see something happen I know kavaliro has a good point on the quality of pdfs and of course I can't expect FG to chase after Palladium if they aren't interested or even make it difficult to contact them. Heres hoping the stars align!

I could have swore I've seen posts somewhere.... can I find them today? Nope, but I think this is one of the better places to ask.

In regards to Rifts, there is actually a very basic community Ruleset for it. It have very little customization beyond the character sheet, but it is usable.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I'm working on converting "The Lost Temple of Yig", a Call of Cthulhu scenario which I think originally was published in the d20's Call of Cthulhu Gamemaster's Pack to FG.
However, even if the scenario is in the D20 rules, it does have all the information needed to run it in the original ruleset also. So what I'm doing is to remove the references to the d20 ruleset and just keep in the 'normal' rules making it inline with other CoC adventures.
Is there any specific 'layout' or style which is preferred.. I've seen some of the scenarios have lots of links back and forth in the story and such. I'm also working on doing something similar when it's done.
However, I can't see it in the list in the second post - so I'm not sure if it's of any interest to people here? I just thought that it would be nice to share it when it's done.

Send a message to Doug and make sure no-one else is doing/done it, I wouldn't think so if it's not mentioned already.
In your scenario make sure that you have an index page, and in each story entry have a 'next/previous' and 'link' back to the section. I've done this with all my conversions based on feedback from others on the CoC forums.
Also post in there what you're doing so people can offer advice.
Nice one though.

I'm about a third to a half of the way through "Call of Cthulhu: The Great Old Ones," just in case anyone else is working on this. Just two questions, and I apologise if this has been answered previously, but I trawled though the first 15 or so pages and couldn't find an answer.
Firstly, do I need to do anything regarding permissons for copyright or not seeing as this was included in the second post in this thread?
Secondly, do I have to use the artwork, especially character portraits, as published or would it be acceptable to use "real pictures as tokens?"

I find it hard to believe that 4th ed is played by that many people. I bought the basic books and read them, playtested them, then gave them to a consignment store to sell for me as no one would even look at them online for half the cover price. The consignment store still has had no one buy them. So why I believe they may have sold that many copies, I do not believe that many are still playing. It is in my list of the worst rules set I have ever played, (list includes The Morrow Project, & The Arduin Grimores), in 40 years of gaming.
It is utter trash. It is the reason that Pathfinder has taken the lead in the genre. I have also purchased the 5th ed basic books and am only slightly less disappointed. It has some potential, but thanks to 4th ed I can not even find anyone who will playtest it.
I just want to say; I love the setting for The Morrow Project and it can be played, but it is very complicated. To the point that most folks have no interest in it. I use GDWs Twilight 2000/2013 rules for it. I am slowly writing the parts that are needed.

5% of games on FG (and similar numbers on roll20 too I might add) are 4e. 5%? Not much you might think. Thats 5th place on Fantasy Grounds (and 4th on roll20).
And 5e has almost half the entire market all to itself.

Still, should get Secrets of San Francisco completed, and then soon after some Dead Light....

Doug, is it possible to get an updated list publishers that you guys would like to see material converted for. I know one line of material I would like to convert but I know they don't have a current license with you.

Hello, everyone.
Well, I am aware that this specific thread is not focused on D&D 5th ed. Material, but I didn’t found any other place to ask this, and thought it would be better do it here instead of starting another one.
As things go, I am finishing this week a set with four battle maps in high resolution, with descriptions of the general features of the areas, and also some pre-made encounters, so a DM, for example, activate the module and have anything he/she needs to run a encounter there, if the need arises.
Since I am planning to use the full content of D&D 5th ed., not only the SRD, I think I will be bound to publish the material through DM’s Guild. But I also think I prefer to share any profit, be it website access, be it money, with Smite Works first and then WotC, so I wish to know if there is a way to do this trough FG Store.
Finally, if that is not a possibility, I would like to know if I could post the FG modules in DM’s Guild as zip files, so any FG user can download it from there, or if it would represent some copyright infringement related to FG software use. That way, I can mark them as “pay what you want”; therefore, if someone likes it enough to share some bucks, that would be a great way to fund my site, for example.
Thanks for any insight on this.
=)

If you want to include WotC material that isn't in the SRD then you'll need to direct your request to WotC. Without their permission you can't publish anything, anywhere at any time.

I was wondering this too. The xml format that FG uses for 5e is free, so it's allowed to share 5e modules among the community (assuming no WotC content). And the DMsG allows the selling of WotC content. But is it allowed to sell content that is formatted in the free xml format that FG uses for the 5e ruleset? Does putting the label 'file made for use with the Fantasy Grounds virtual tabletop software' cross some legal line?

Doug has been working on a proposal for this, but it's a little complex with the DM's Guild stuff since there are multiple companies involved.

This is one thing that motivated me to ask in first place.
I know that WotC is very rigid with its licenses (and they are right to be), but since Fantasy Grounds is publishing official content, and since DMs Guild is allowing the publication of content using “restricted” information, I thought to be worth to ask if, by chance, Smite Works had some kind of similar license.
In the event of a complete negative answer, I would like to provide my content on DMs Guild, because there I could publish a PDF file and a FG Module, so both worlds (VTT and in-person games) can see and use them, but I don’t want to cross any legal line.
Finally, I would not mind to use only the SRD, and post my things right on my site or on FG Store, but this would present two problems I would need to solve: first, again, the legality of sharing/selling something created with FG outside FG site.
Second, the lack of ability to create a “pay what you want” model, where I can share for free, but still be able to receive something if someone liked my content enough to give me a few dollars, greatly motivating me to produce more =)

Nice, MW!
I will finish my module, send an email to Doug and ask if he can review what I had created and tell me if, and how, it can publish it. For now, I will stick with the SRD, to avoid major conflicts. All in all, since it is my very first module, I would share it for free anyway.

So, here's my understanding.
First, distributing FG modules outside of the FG store is permissible as far as licensing with SmiteWorks go. This does not mean you can include IP owned by anyone, but does mean you can distribute all original content in FG format however and where-ever you want. (AAW is one example.)
Within the license of the DMsG, you can publish your module there (as a zip). About the only relevant WotC stuff you can not include is artwork. That means that the FG tokens included with the MM in FG can not be included (as I understand it). So, you could include a 5E FG module using the monsters etc, just not the tokens. Or you could include links to the MM monsters and state that the host (DM) must have the MM in order to use your module.
I too have been waiting for Doug to get an agreement that would allow us to distribute through the FG store under a license similar to the DMsG.

My general understanding is the same as yours, but I wish to be sure, so I do not end making a mistake.
About the tokens, I am planning to create a generic set, very simple because I am not an artist, probably just a coin-like shape with symbols or names written to include on my modules.
I would be very interest in build a whole, free collection of tokens and small maps, with nice art, to share with FG content creators, so they could include the tokens in their products too - something like a “Fantasy Grounds Content Creator Art Database” – in short, FG-CCA Database, much like what CSUAC was for Dundjinni (lol).
People would be free to use this database freely to create FG content only, and commercial products would need to be sold only on FG Store, so we would be able to support further the development of Fantasy Grounds.
However, despite being able to do some things on Photoshop, I will not be able to draw the creature portraits to be included there so, for now, just generic coin-like images will need to suffice.

Distributing is different from selling. AAW has an agreement directly with SW. A random person that hasn't entered into an agreement 'may' not be allowed to profit off of FG-formatted files. Or they may; depends on what SW says. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that free distribution is acceptable by selling isn't.
About the only relevant WotC stuff you can not include is artwork. That means that the FG tokens included with the MM in FG can not be included (as I understand it).
The DMsG provides stock art that could be used. I'm not sure how robust the selection is or if you are allowed to crop the images (to make tokens). But there is a chance of this working out. And if not, people can make generic royalty-free stock art (like the PF paper minis art; simple but effective) for others to use in DMsG products. I don't remember if you can sell stock art directly on the DMsG, but you can just sell it campaign-agnostic on the sister site DriveThruRPG. Something for our FG artist to do to make some extra money and fill the gap.
I too have been waiting for Doug to get an agreement that would allow us to distribute through the FG store under a license similar to the DMsG.
This most likely won't happen. WotC set up the DMsG to be the only place normal people can sell 5e material. They use it to search for talent and writers for official WotC stuff. If they let SW allow normal people to produce 5e material it probably wouldn't allow non-SRD material and would require WotC to monitor two sites for writers. One of the major reasons WotC uses OneBookShelf (the company that hosts the DMsG) is because of the rating system. FG's Store doesn't have that and I doubt SW wants to restructure the store for feedback.

Nickademus is correct. We have an agreement in place with AAW and with a few other people that allow them to sell and distribute content. We provide them reports and royalties for stuff that sells through our storefront and they provide us payment for stuff that sells through their outlets. They are able to use our trademarks and logos on their products as part of this agreement.

Without using the SW or FG trademarks and logos, can modules created for FG be distriuted through other channels without approval from SmiteWorks?
p.s. And, I'm still holding my breath for the other announcement :)!

As long as it is your own unique creation and you aren't using our trademarks or logos, then you can distribute them. When people ask us for permission to use our name and logos, we often grant it as well.

So this means that a .mod file with the xml formatted in a way that FG could use is completely in the open? It's only the use of the name 'Fantasy Grounds' on the product that is not allowed?

Hi FG Team,
I'm currently converting and re-doing all the maps with CC3 (which I purchased) for Axe of the Dwarvish Lords by Skip Williams. I am laying out the module in FG by using the aids provided by Jason Hibdon on Youtube using Notebook to see how I am going to separate my story-board so everything follows. I am also going to create new maps for those areas that don't have any for the first chapter and a map of the dwarf city of Oredeep.
Is this something I will be either able to sell on the Dungeon Master's Guild or at least share on the Forum. Putting all this in FG and not being able to share it kinda is crappy. It is something I would at least like to share with the community?
Thank you:)

Can't put it on DMs Guild because it is set in Greyhawk (can only use Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft and Generic settings in DMs Guild) and also because I guess you're reproducing the whole module. The most you can do is 5E conversions that still require the original module. Maybe you could look into doing a 5E conversion that is located in Forgotten Realms? But you still wouldn't be able to include wholesale the material of the original product.
Can't share on the FG forums as the material is copyright protected.

I believe you can share your maps on DMsGuild since those are all new. None of the text/story would be able to be shared though. If you have any questions, you can contact the DMsGuild to get a ruling in advance. They have an FAQ on the site.

The module is a general module not associated to any world. They provide you with ideas as to where you can set it for each campaign world. I have talked with the DM's guild to see what was possible.
Thanks for the info. I have a good idea now as to how and what I will do to the story to re-model it for a continuation to Tyranny of Dragons follow-up for 15+ level characters. I'll be likely changing a lot of the NPC's and main creatures as well as adding more story to it. If I decide to share it on FG to be safe I'll submit it to you and go from there. I am not one to break the rules.
Thanks again guys:)

Dragon Age is not likely to be one we can license. There are multiple levels of licensing involved with that one that make it hard for us to get in that same space with a digital RPG. The other two are possible but I would like to see a fairly good sample of work or work in progress before approaching the publisher to request a license for either of those. Doing a ruleset is very time consuming and I hate to give a publisher the impression that we have one ready to go when it could be a year or two before one completes.

An official 13th Age ruleset is in the works, the guy(s) doing it are hoping it's out before the new year but we'll see.
Making a ruleset is incredibly difficult and time-consuming, there are no tools to build one, just pure XML and Lua scripting. Not for the faint of heart.

Once complete, you can use a few different options to get more eyes on the product and reviews that help drive more sales at DMsGuild. Mark them as Pay-What-You-Want and list a suggested price. Include the entire product as a free preview or at least a large chunk of it -- maybe all but the final chapter. This way people can check it out in its entirety first and then decide its value instead of having to decide the value sight unseen.
The other option is to list it there with the price you want it to be and then send review copies to DM's who have left thoughtful reviews on other products. With luck, they will review your module and share their thoughts as well.
You can mark it as including a Fantasy Grounds component with these steps:

I had thought that to sell FG modules they either needed to be sold through the DMsGuild or a license with SmiteWorks had to be obtained. Is that not the case or do all of the One Book Shelf sites (RPGNow/DriveThruRPG, etc) fall under the DMsGuild outlet/rules?

In hindsight, I think you are correct. This is set up with the appropriate revenue shares for DMs Guild but I don't believe that carries over, even though they own all of those sites.

As damned implies, you could do this ruleset yourself. It is generally accepted that game mechanics can not be copyrighted. So if you make a ruleset and do not include any of the text, images or product identity; then you can release the ruleset on the forums here.
That being said, creating a ruleset is not a simple task and is something usually done out of love for a system that you want to play yourself.

Well, for WFRPG 4th Edition, you've got two issues: One, I don't see Cubicle7 as one of the publishers who have licensed with SmiteWorks (at least not on the dev spreadsheet, which I'm not sure is 100% complete?), and two, assuming they did license, as mentioned above, rulesets are a monumental task taking in the range of six months or more for an experienced full-time programmer (see: the Starfinder ruleset in development) up to years (see: many community rulesets).
There's already a list of game systems with licensed publishers just waiting for a developer to develop a ruleset, but because of the time and effort involved, and practically zero return on that investment, no one has stepped up to do any of them yet.
Not to go full Grinch and ruin your dreams :) but having realistic expectations is a good thing. There's a reason most people just settle on making things work "good enough" in MoreCore so they can go ahead and play the games.

SmiteWorks dont have the resources to develop additional rulesets outside their core ones (5e, Pathfinder, 4e, 3.5e and CoreRPG and the less well supported Numenera) so it will either be done by a community developer or not at all...

Hi Everyone,
I just used Fantasy Grounds II on native OS X last night and loved it!
Metamorphosis Alpha has had a lot of development over the past three years, especially MA1e, thanks to Goodman Games. Extra mutations, equipment and adventures would be a terrific addition to the range of games that FG II supports.
How much would it cost to develop the basic 32 page book, initially?
Is there an interest in doing this?
Thanks,
Craig J.Brain

Adding the 32 page book in as reference material is quite do-able.
Creating a ruleset is quite a lot harder.
Smiteworks only develop their core/headline rulesets - 5e, Pathfinder, 3.5e/4e, Numenera and CoreRPG.
All other rulesets are done by an independent community programmer.
Typically the cost is:
% split of sales to FG
% split of sales to Publisher
% split of sales to Developer
or the same as above plus an upfront fee for the development
Smaller/niche game systems will not experience anywhere near the sales the 5e does so attracting a developer is the hard part.
Please start a new thread and explain the core mechanics of the system and we can see what might be involved.

Game mechanics can not be copyrighted or restricted. So you can always do a community ruleset. But, the content, the Product Identity names, verbatim text for class/ability/items etc can and are protected. So you could put together a community ruleset and distribute that, but not the "books" or content.
There are quite a few community rulesets that follow this model.
But I would also suggest you look to MoreCore for something that can get you the character sheets and die rolls most any game needs.

Welcome Micco52
Generally you will need to show a first draft of a working ruleset before an agreement can be reached. This is a significant impost on you the developer but it is very common for someone to start a project and not complete it for various reasons. You should email
[email protected] to confirm what editions/publishers they have interest in getting converted before getting too far along. Sometimes a publisher that was interested withdraws or vice versa.
Good luck - I would love to see Paranoia!

I think it has been mentioned a number of times in various threads. There is unlikely ever to be any kind of Star wars official products because the licensing is way too complicated, and it's doubtful that Disney or LucasArts or whoever has bits of the license would really be interested in any kind of deal that isn't going to make them millions.

Unfortunately Zacchaeus is correct. Even though West End Games had the Star Wars license at the time that they made those books, they no longer have it and therefore are not able to produce new products. They probably are not even able to reprint old products. Either way, Fantasy Grounds conversions would be different enough to likely be considered "new products" and I wouldn't want to risk falling on the wrong side of a lawsuit. Even a lawsuit you could "win" would not be worth it in this situation.

Hi, I was wondering if is it possible to create the ruleset of a game which the owner company went in liquidation in 2011.
It was an Italian company that stop producing in 2008, been under another company just for the actual production of board game materials, and went in the end in liquidation in 2011.
The game is in Italian, called Ken Shiro - Il gioco di ruolo. It's a game on The Fist of the Nort Star. Game is quite basic, I'll look in the forum to gain more information on how to produce the ruleset in case there is a green light on it.
Than you!

You can create a ruleset in FG for any game. In general game mechanics can not be copyrighted. But artwork and text and some terms can be. So, you could create a ruleset for the game, but you could not include any artwork, text from the rulebooks, or protected terms (like their are some monsters that WotC claims as product identity).

In most situations, we recommend basing any ruleset on the CoreRPG ruleset, so that it can inherit the base RPG-style functionality as well as receive RPG game system-neutral updates more easily.

Well, I am currently running a pen and paper Birthright campaign setting adventure for anywhere between 5-10 players. I have been doing this for about a year with some success. I want to expand my DM skills/offerings and start to play Dragonlance campaign modules with some of my friends. I think that I will start using Fantasy Grounds for its 2e rule set features to help with organization, planning, and presentation. I'm toying with the idea of using a TV as board for interactive dungeons. Currently I used Campaign Cartographer to make some pretty cool maps and battle tiles. I also use Hobbyte's Dungeon Builder, which has some pretty cool isometric features and coincidentally uses Unity. I pretty much have been dabbling in a lot of digital D&D tools and I just want to see FG or someone even WoTC make modules of their old content so it will make it easier for me as a DM. As it stands I put in a lot of work, which I love doing actually, but I'm baffled that WoTC has not attempted to unify and organize their vast library in to easy to use formats. D&D 5e is already fracturing the same way 3.5e did with all the Unearthed Arcana supplements and those supplements aren't all that organized. D&D is D&D it doesn't matter the rule set, I have my favorite settings and I think I'm just going to try and convert everything to 5e rules in the future using guidelines published by WoTC for converting characters and other stuff to 5e, but I'd still like to use the older campaign settings as backdrops because they have much better narrative flow, deeper lore, and etc. I'm rambling, I know, thanks for listening.

Hi. While they aren't hiring there are lots of community developers that write stuff for their own games. Many of the rulesets listed in the store started off as free projects for the community. Maybe play around with and make something small, get your feet wet with a theme or extension and go from there. There is also a trove of unconverted 2E supplements and modules that you might give a go at. To be honest I'd love to see some of the 2E modules with modern maps in place of the old ones, it sounds like your skills might do well for that.
While I'd love to see a full Birthright setting implemented in FG it is certainly not where I'd start. I'd start small and build up to that because it would probably be the most difficult setting to implement because of all the extra mechanics (domain actions, blood abilities, realm/war spells, holdings, etc...)

Just for my 5 cents. Why not publish more rulesets from certain publishers. Just an example... You published Conan for 2D20, but thats all. There are several systems that are very close to Conan (like MC3).
Then came out Alien RPG (which is good), but nothing to Mutant Year Zero, Forbidden Lands or even Coriolis. All those are widely played...and pretty similar. Can we expect those?

Modiphius has contracted their own development crew to handle the 2d20 material, so they're not using the 'normal' process through SmiteWorks that we're used to. Next on Modiphius' list is Star Trek Adventures, which is in progress (nearing completion) last I saw on their Facebook page.

Hey so I've been starting the process of converting various PDFs for PFRPG2.
A developer I've been following is 'Necromancers of the Northwest'. If they are interested in selling through you guys, I'm interested in providing the content.
The other one I think is neat (different developer) is the 'Pnoll' race which is also available on drivethrurpg, not sure if that was brought over here yet.

As I recommended to Papi, it would be best to reach out to support to get the next steps in getting that process started. You can reach out them then through this link

I wanted to ask, since i have contacted WoTC and received a general response. I requested to discuss license use of their 3.5e content, and was forwarded to the Fan Content agreement. So that said, if I create the modules containing all content for 3.5e could I have it posted for free to download here on FG with a donation link?

No. We did not get permission to create or distribute any D&D 3.5E or D&D 4E content. You can only distribute content that would be free for you to reprint. If you comply with the Open Gaming License, you would be allowed to create and share limited portions of it.

Thank you.
So I can create supplemental modules of specific categories (i.e. Items, Classes, Spells) for this platform, and post on a site like reddit for everyone to enjoy. That would not hinder/upset any party?

If you create your own content and you want it to be free, you can post it here, reddit, and elsewhere. If you sell it or it has a monetary component, then you have to get a Publisher Agreement set up, or wait for the FG Forge to be rolled out. The FG Forge is a new publishing platform we hope to have available soon.
Just make sure you abide by any and all copyright laws with the content you produce.

Two or three weeks ago I wrote to Cubicle7 to check if and when Warhammer FRP will be released for Fantasy Grounds. They informed me that they are currently focusing their capacities on other projects and directed me to Roll20 and Foundry VTT. Well, now I'm waiting for the restrictions in North Rhine-Westphalia to be eased so that I can play WFRP at the table with my friends.

Think it has nothing to do with cubical... if you go to them and offer a working wfrpg solution they can just take their share, they will be happy... (at least for foundry i´m pretty sure it worked that way)

Doug,
I have been producing conversions for D&D 5e content for FGC and FGU that go on the DMsGuild with Rob Twohy and other parties have begun contacting me directly wanting to discuss having me convert their D&D 5e content so they can put it on the SmiteWorks marketplace.
How does one get on a short list like Zacchaeus to convert products for you? I figure those 3rd party groups can either come to you with mod files (that I converted) to sell or they come to you with the PDFs and we can convert them and update them as the new updates to FGC or FGU go live... What's the right way to do this and how do I get vetted to make sure I am producing mod files that meet your standards?
Thoughts?
