View Full Version : Could not initialize DirectX

From reading other posts here I may be screwed, but here goes...

I just upgraded from an ATI video card to an Nvidia card. After the upgrade everything seems to work fine except for Fantasy Grounds, which gives an error and won't start.

The error is:
Could not initialize DirectX
CheckDeviceType failed! Error code 16
Could not initialize graphics system!

I ran the DirectX diags, and the card passed with flying colors.
I reinstalled FG2, but it didn't help.
I reinstalled the drivers (latest from Nvidia) but it didn't help.

Any suggestions?

If the Nvidia card supports dx9c its almost certainly software.

What is the card?

Have you tried reinstalling DX9c?

Aye, as Sigurd says: It's not the card drivers, it's directX that needs reinstalling. (DirectX 9.0c (https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3))

I reinstalled what I *think* is the DirectX software. I will try again.

The new (to me) card is a GeForce FX 5700LE. My OS is XP with the latest SP and updates.

I do have a secondary video card - a VooDoo3 - but it FG2 has been working well with that card installed before the GeForce came along.

There are either hardware problems with the Nvidia card, or its driver is so lousy that it can't be made to work without more effort than I am willing to expend. I have reverted to my old ATI card and all is well.

FYI: I did find that FG2 gave the DirectX error with both cards when the Voodoo3 was selected as the primary display.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone!
