Are players able to create characters without being logged onto a game?
I'm very new to the whole FGII world and have been able to find the answers to most of my questions already. I'd just like to be able to have a character ready before joining in a game.

It is totally dependant on which ruleset you have. There are very few that are really designed to allow the lite version of FG to make a local character off line.

Most rulesets do allow the full version of FG to more or less make a local character - how well this works depends on how the ruleset is put togeather. Most ruleset makers do not put a high value on people making local characters offline because the characters can be made by connecting to the GM's machine in the first session and FG is normally used for ongoing campaigns where this is a one time thing.

I know many people in an online FG RPGA group who specifically bought the full version over the lite version to allow them to mostly prepare their characters before a game.

Ask if you have more questions or you are interested in make characters for a specific ruleset and you should get a better answer.

One thing that my players tend to do is to prepare their characters in notepad/excel and then just copy from there to FG when the server is started.

Premade fillable pdf or excel character sheets are also great for this.

Thank you both for the info and quick replies. I am asking specifically about Rolemaster. I did just buy the lite license. If I want to have more options offline, I need to pay for the full and buy the ruleset?

Hi Ellyka and welcome to the forums, I hope you find us helpful!

The Rolemaster ruleset, like most others, is designed for a GM to host (using the ruleset+a Full licence) and for players to connect (with no ruleset and Lite licences).

To be honest, buying a full licence and a copy of the ruleset will give you some extra functionality to create offline characters for an FG game (such as having the reference material available when you are offline), but it doesn't make this an offline product: for example, much of the automation isn't available in offline mode.

Like a number of FG GMs, I tend to load up my campaign and leave it running (unattended) for a few hours on occasion: this allows players to connect and roll up characters at will. If you let your players know when this is going to happen, they can make new PCs

Hope that helps!

So what if you want to add in a character that has already been created for say 4th ed D&D?

Foen, thank you as well. The info you have all given has definitely helped. Now for my 10,000 other questions.....;)

Hi Jarza, and welcome here too!

There is a 4e ruleset supported by the community (there isn't an official one) and available on the Four Ugly Monsters (FUM) web site, but I'm not familiar with how it works. I believe there is a community-built utility for converting DDI characters for use with that ruleset, but I haven't used it myself.

Useful links:

DDI to FG converter thread (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9361)

Hope that helps

Thanks for the links I already found FUM so I have their 4E ruleset. Just kept running into problems trying to enter the character I wanted to use.. I will have to check that converter out.
Thanks again.

Remember if you have the lite version you are not going to be able to build a character ahead of time - you need to connect to the host.

So if you make a character online while connected to the server and then go offline, you can't access the character and make changes?

Perhaps the answer is to have a computer that is always connected up and running the game.. hmm...

I think with the release of v2.5, SmiteWorks added the ability to review a character from a campaign that you have previously signed into. It appears to pull the character data from the cache, and it's read-only.
