A Question About The Game...

Firstly, I would like to apologize if this question has been asked before. However, I'm willing to do a lot to ensure my group can have a passable D&D session online, so --... Yeah.

Anyway, here's the question: A friend gave me the link to this website, and I'm impressed. This is exactly what I've been looking for for a while, but I want to do this with a particular group of friends that don't have this game. Now, I noticed that the game costs $40...

So, is it possible to have one person buy the game and 'Host' for the others (I have three friends that don't have it and one that does), or does everyone have to have the game?

This would make my work as an online DM easier -- We've been planning to use Yahoo! Messenger, and everything's almost set up -- but if it was possible to do this with only me having to pay for the costs (thus only $40 instead of $160), then I'm all sorts of giddy.

You are the only person that would need to buy the full license as you are DMing, your friends would have to obtain a lite license to connect to you.

There is a bundle discount which should reduce the cost as well which on 1 Full and 3 Lite would save you nearly $50.

Also, does one person pay for it at once, or is it possible to split the cost up amongst multiple people (though I presume that makes it not a bundle)? I ask because my family doesn't use credit cards and because the others are... Well, not related to me, and thus we have no way of transferring money to each other. They live in other parts of the nation.

Next question. After purchasing the product, I'm guessing that I have to then purchase a setting, as does every other player. Is this correct or is there a standard 3.5 setting in the original product?

Normal 3.5 rules apply to this product, correct? 3.0?

What you could do is buy the bundle yourself, and have your friends "buy" their license from you, at the now-reduced cost.

You can also find rulesets created by other FG users for free in the Armory (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=44) forum, or on the Fantasy Grounds Wiki (https://oberoten.dyndns.org/fgwiki/index.php/Category:Rulesets)
(Of course, if you want one of the rulesets available in the store, you'll have to buy them there)

Just to elaborate on Lithl's final point a bit...

If by 'setting' you mean a campaign world like Greyhawk or Forgotten Realms, it does come with a sample campaign (A Tale of Dinor, same as the demo).

There's one available in the store as well. I haven't checked it out.

Also their are different rulesets people have done as well. And I know others have converted/created a bunch of ogl stuff if your interested in 3.5.

The others have it right about the various game systems (implemented in FG as 'rulesets') which you can find on the wiki as Lithl says.

It is also worth noting, however, that only the GM needs to install a ruleset, so even a purchased one (for $10-$20) isn't too expensive as you only need one license for it. The community rulesets are generally of a very high standard, but you still only need to download them to the GM's machine.

Ok, How do i go about hosting a game?
In the demo the host a game icon was there click a button and Bang you had your server info available to play with others. Now I purchase the full version and the GUI is completely different and all I can do is Create load and join a game. What the ....

Anyone else having this problem?
How do I resolve it? i paid for the full version and my receipt says just that.

The demo hasn't been updated to reflect the new launcher that was changed in the last major update to FG.

Instead of pressing the "Host a Game as a Gamemaster" button and then the "Load campaign" buttons in the demo you just press the Load Campaign button in the new launcher then double click on the campaign's name you want to host for an existing campaign.

The new laucher's "Create New Campaign" is the same as pressing "Host a Game as a Gamemater" button and the "Create new campaign" button in the demo.

The Join Game button has exactly the same function as Join a Game as a Player button in the demo.

Likewise the Manage Characters button is the same as the Create and View Local Characters button in the demo.

All the same functionallity is still there and FG is the same past the lancher other than you now have the option to return to the launcher.

In the Full version you also have to select a ruleset to use to create your campaign, as the Full version allows you to play with any system developed for FG (d20, D&D 4e, GURPS, Savage Worlds, Call of Cthulhu, etc), whereas the demo is restricted to D&D 3.5.
