Question for those with more experience than I with FG....say i wanted to test-run a game with some characters of my own (4e DnD specifically), without running a game online.

Does FG allow for a person to load more than one character and run a module all on one computer? Or, put a different way, can I DM and run characters through a game all on my PC?

I'm really looking to play around with some character "teams" and builds and want to see how they really play instead of just in theory, and using FG would make this soooooo much easier if it's possible!

Thanks!!

1. Start a DM instance of Fantasy Grounds
2. Start a Player instance of Fantasy Grounds and connect to 127.0.0.1 or localhost.
3. Make as many characters as you want.
4. ???
5. Profit!!!

Don't forget you have to change your name for the player instance.

Right. I believe one of Xorne's tutorials shows him doing something like that, the QuickPlay one.

It works but I think you'll find that the juggling is truly sub optimal.

What if you have two computers and one broadband connection. Can you run a DM application on one computer, and a player application on the other computer?
Moreover, can you control more than one character through one player application, for testing purposes?

You can run with two computers and one broadband connection. The broadband connection isn't important - what is important that the computers are connected by a router. The client would use the *local* ip address shown in the Host a Game window of the host to connect to rather than an alias.

The client can run as many characters as you want. Some people use FG to play in face to face games where the DM has a computer and the client is either run on a second computer.

Taking the DM off the player computer would make a huge difference. That way the DM can leave maps, notes, pdfs, or whatever up on the screen to answer player questions and not have the player simply read it for himself.

Having players take turns at the client computer might work if they were really close. You might feel a little like 'the cone of silence' from Get Smart. Each player is going to want to study the situation before their turn if they haven't seen\heard well enough. Expect a lot of repeats.

Ironically, a player on the internet just logging in from the other side of the world might have better access to screen information than people sharing a computer in the same room as the DM. Its likely that most of your conversation will be just conversation unless you all like typing.
