Save a server character to a local computer

How can I log into a GM hosted server game, and save my character onto my PC so I can edit it between games? Then log in with it again next game session?

The only way I know to do this is through manually editing the db.xml on the host computer, extracting the character, e-mailing it to the player, and then pasting it into the local db.xml. This is non-trivial. I've never actually done it, but it should work.
