Terrible title for a terrible problem. I don't know where to start. Not with the software, but with anything. Never done the table top thing before, and with lack of local support for the game, I turned to the internet and found this website. So, where do I "start?" What do I do? I don't even know what I need on my computer to any of this. So any help would be much appreciated. :hurt:
On a side note I found this website while googling Kthulu, something else I like. :)

The best way to learn is to just jump in and "sink or swim" as they say. If you would like to learn how to play 3.5 D&D let me know, I am more than willing to host some sessions and teach you how to play.
If you would like to learn how to play the newer 4th Edition of Dungeons and Dragons I am sure you will have no trouble at all finding people to help you with that as well. Other gaming systems get a little harder to find people for, but Fantasy Grounds has a well rounded following, and you should be able to find atleast someone for any system you happen to have an interest in.
I hope this has helped you in some way. Any other questions feel free to ask, I will do my best to answer any of them, as I am sure many other people here will do as well.

Cool, thanks. I guess I'll have to get a hold of you once I can go buy this. I just need to buy the "Fantasy Grounds II Lite License", no?

Cool, thanks. I guess I'll have to get a hold of you once I can go buy this. I just need to buy the "Fantasy Grounds II Lite License", no?If you think you might want to run a game yourself one day, it's best to get the Full license. Only licensees of earlier versions can currently upgrade.
Otherwise, go for it, get a Lite license and welcome to a great hobby!

I'd recommend trying out the demo first, if only to make sure the software will run on your computer. It's also a good way to get to grips with the software and what it can do. In the library section of the website is a basic user guide. Download the demo and have a play. You can start up twice and connect to your own computer to see the view as a GM and as a player.
If you do decide to buy, I'd agree with Spyke and recommend you go with the Full version if you can. It gives you more options and there's no upgrade option later if you want to go beyond the Lite license.

I would go ahead and pick up the demo version, but I wouldn't know what to do with it. Yea, the tutorials could help, but don't they assume I have knowledge how to do this kind of stuff on paper?

Lixxark, do you mean that you have never played a role-playing game before and would like to try, or that you have just never tried it with a virtual table top?
If you said yes to the first option, I would recommend just grabbing a copy of a D&D Player's Handbook or the World of Darkness Storytelling System Rulebook (the main rulebooks for the two most popular games) and reading it to see how you like the idea. That will give you a better feel for what you're in for than just playing around with Fantasy Grounds.

Correct you would be with the first option. As my first post says there isn't much support for it where I live, so I come this website. So, in essence, I am both new to this website and the genre itself.

I'm running a couple of walkthrough tutorial / demos on Thursday and Friday nights as part of FUMCon (on the Four Ugly Monsters website). They'll be in the European time zones (8pm UK time) if that is any good to you. These will use the demo version.

Where do you live, Lixxark, if you don't mind my asking?

A decent sized town south of Omaha, Nebraska. I will be relocating to Lincoln, Nebraska in the fall for school though.
Thanks for the offer for the tutorial, but the times you are offering are about two hours too early for my local time. =X

I am still willing to run some sessions to help you learn how to play D&D 3.5
In fact that offer stands for anyone who would like to learn how to use the 3.5 edition of D&D. Just figure out a good time and I will do my best to fit it. I have a very flexible work schedule.... it would be difficult for me to fire myself.

Thank you for this. I am assuming I can get away with buying the Fantasy Grounds software only, correct? I don't need to buy all those "rule book" things too, do I? :hurt:

All you would need is Fantasy Grounds to learn to play. Once you have learned how the game works, and if you decide you like it there are some other books you should buy for the expanded rules... But to learn nothing more is needed.

I'd love to learn as well. Sorry to just jump in like this, but I'm trying to get involved as well. Currently I have the demo but have not used it. Trying to get back into the hobby after 18 years away and this seems like a decent possibility. I am also into Call of Cthulhu and Savage Worlds but haven't played them either. Just read the books. Hard to find folks to play with around here. Actually impossible. Let me know if I can get involved.
I'm in CT in the US if that's any help.
Hope to hear from you.
