During sessions we have single communication channel, which is voice. Chat is used by me as GM to send secret messages or things only for specific player's ears and by players who are not under the spotlight to discuss something so they don't interfere with the actual play.
No in-game talks happen in the chat, mostly meta-game and out of game talks and quite brief. The chat is for roll resultsThe past is a rudder to guide us, not an anchor to hold us back.

I appreciate the sentiment of avoiding the exclusive "text-only" or "voice only". The main focus of the post was how to use text AND voice together to create the richest environment possible. I think your post raises a lot of great points and details a lot of the benefits of text chat.
