The one that hits home for me - The Wizard! In second edition, the mage had 1d4 hp (and we rolled that back in the day) and one spell.
"Do I use it now?!"
Invariably, I almost never used it because I was afraid to waste it when I needed it for a bigger foe just around the next corner.

Ah, the halcyon days of AD&D, when men were real men, women were real women, and 1st level mages were...real(ly) useless.
I'm not stupid, I'm not expendable, and I'm not going!
(But I'll happily be GM...)
