What are you going to use more?
You can play SF without the ruleset if you have to. You can use a free map maker if you have to.

If you are only a player, you don't need to buy the ruleset and I think SF has an SRD or basic rules you can get online for free right? Is one of them going to enable you to play more? Enjoy more? Go for that one.

Well I have the pdf's of the game.
And its highly likely I will never find the time to play.

Guess its obvious what I should do!

Get Fractal Mapper 8 and augment it with the free CSUAC graphic resources. Look hard at the Sci-Fi Gamer Bundle from NBOS - might be really handy if you own Starfinder....

Anyhow, that leaves you with the $60 for Starfinder and a solid mapping tool.

Full disclosure - I own both Fractal Mapper and Campaign Cartographer. I like FM as well as Campaign Cartographer for battlemaps which is the bulk of my mapping needs. CC3 is a lot better for campaign maps and for achieving a particular style. I am not saying to bypass CC3 - I am just suggesting that you can get a lot of what you want done until you can afford the more capable tool.
