It might help to know the history of FG, the core of the program was developed in 2006 by two guys in Norway (maybe Sweden? one of those northern european countries). So the standards are definitely odd from a current developer's standpoint.

As a GM, I've always allowed my players to email me a portrait and a token for their character if they want, and I've been pretty successful at this and the players seem to like it.
As far as buying products - I'm really not into buying product to run my games, I pretty much make my own modules and the like, I've even gotten to the point where I modify the rulesets I use to match the game I'm running (which really precludes the concept of purchasing product I suppose...)
