I have no interest in debating rules with you. These have been around for over 10 years (from D&D 3.x) and most people seem fine with them.

However, I would suggest you look at the rules in more depth. As there are other things that control the amount of damage taken from an attack. For example: Damage Reduction is just for weapon and natural attack damage, resistance covers damage from other sources (fire, electricity, etc.).

For NPCs these effects will be parsed from the statblock (if the correct wording is used in the Defense section) when a NPC is added to the combat tracker.
