FG on Steam
Which Fantasy Grounds should someone new get when going through the Steam platform?
This is the page I'm at
https://store.steampowered.com/app/252690/
Can people connect to each other through Steam?
Is there an active community on Steam or does Fantasy Grounds have a lobby system connecting people to all platforms?

Typically, unless you are buying for someone else, just get the $40 license.
Everyone matchmakes though Smiteworks server using an alias or directly via TCP. However make sure you understand that FG is not a game, per se, it allows you to play RPG games over the Internet and some DLCs have game rule manuals. Most games are long term and there are not many "pick up games." Because of that there isn't a lobby like a for a multiplayer game.
Keep asking questions if you don't understand.

So with this purchase one would be able to find others through Smiteworks and play the game they are hosting?

There is no lobby built in to the software, so the typical method of finding folks would be on the forum here or on the Steam forums. The ones here are more active. In addition, there are some active Facebook and G+ groups out there, such as the Society of Extraordinary Gamers. Whether you bought your copy of FG through Steam or outside of Steam, you will be able to connect and play with others who bought it from either of those locations.
