Details of your scemario: A strange, foreign wizard calling himself Kelvan has appeared at the same time a mountain materializes out of thin air. He asks you to recover the Gloomblade from a Netherese ruin in order to help him with his research into this strange new mountain. A Two-Hour Adventure for 5th-10th Level Characters. New players welcome and encouraged.
I like to have the characters submitted early, so I have time to prep for them and get the log sheets ready.

Oh no...he only went down temporarily. A well placed dollop of ointment really did the trick.
He made it to level 5, and now has Call Lightning in his repertoire.

I like to keep the late to 30 minutes or less, after that we are deep into the module. If it is going to be closer to 7 we should opt for a later date. (I will run this again in the future!).

Just wait.
Larendil is now a +10 to hit with the bow and gets two attacks. Plus Hunters Mark and Colossus Slayer.

Question - with the discussion we had about making sure that spell damage gets changed at level 5, do the Ranged and Melee Modifiers need to be changed to match the basic ones presented. i.e. should I be Ranged +6 and Melee +6 on my spells or do they remain at +3?

They should be automatic, but the spells aren't. The modifier's on ranged and melee work off of ability mods, when those change so do the mods.
